Had a great hunt this morning...Tama the ol' man actually got me my limit of pheasants this morning! He did well and we had "Bella" our rookie Lab. out for her first hunt and she was great! Birds galore ad they were staying in the fields instead of the woods which was a great surprise...had 3 roosters flush out of the same spot in the field just like the Dakotas! Absolutely awesome!!!!! Met up with a nice older gentleman with a beautiful English Setter named Duke, watching him work was a treat. All in all got up about 20 birds between the 5 of us, 3 of us limited and our buddy brought his 8 yr old son on his 1st hunt and he was able to get a shot out of his .410 at a rooster! The best opener i have had in 5 yrs... Unfortunately my wife was the photographer and 10 min. in her cameras batteries died!! OY!!!! Cant wait to get at 'em again!!! Good luck all! HANK

This morning was fun, but went quick. I arrived in the darkness at a site that was re-listed as a stocking site this year. The trucks were already there in force. I don't really like the crowds and almost left but figured I'd have a go at it. Roux and I hiked up the trail by flashlight and met at the field edge, a large group of guys...waiting for legal time. We talked a bit, the guys I spoke with seemed like good guys. Roux thought the world of everyone. The fog was heavy so a few minutes after legal time we all decided to cut loose the dogs. World war three erupted! Several times I ducked down to one knee because the air was filled with birds, feathers, and lead. All the dogs were running like crazy animals, playing and hunting in a frenzy. Roux locked into a solid point, and as I walked toward her bird the shots and other dogs jumped the bird up. I shot and missed. A quick second point resulted in a nice rooster that I took with my lower barrel. A quick reload as Roux went straight maybe 30 yards and pointed again. As I got to her the bird flushed and I got that one. Two roosters. I quickly reached for her collar, leashed her and stood on the leash so I could stuff my second bird into my vest and get out of dodge! LOL. It was fun, but hectic and really a bit dangerous. When I got out to the road I was met my two game wardens who were really pleasant and professional. It was a pleasure talking with them as they checked me out and saw everything was in order. So I was home by 6:40am, by 8am Roux was combed and put away, gun cleaned, and two mature pheasant roosters cleaned and in the fridge waiting for their next stop...a Pot Pie! It was fun seeing all the dogs and watching people get their birds but next year I'll follow my usual routine. I'll wait and start my season Oct 2nd...after the war is over LOL

Oh, I did keep the wings and have bagged them and placed them in the freezer just in case anyone working a pup would like them. Let me know if you'd like them, I'll hold them for a week or so in case they're needed by anybody. Sounds like Neely already has his , congrats on your morning hunt!

Great hunt Mike! Sounds like the orange army went your way instead of mine! ;D Tama is pretty gimpy right now, which is what I thought would happen. I kept my bird and let my buddies son have the other, Tama tackled it and gave it a good once over, he was psyched to say the least...I kept the other bird for training Neely, took him out in the yard when I got home and just threw it around for him, man did he get excited! Tail wagging and slight chewing which I curbed quickly. Taking the wings off to freeze and will freeze the body for some more training. Might go out early tomorrow with a buddy and his dog before work starts...Tama will get the rest of the week off and be back at it next weekend up north. HANK

Congrats on your first day out It sounded like fun minus the occasional ducking I didn’t see too many guys out down the road from me but then I was by there until later afternoon. I guess now that the season is in I’ll soon be seeing a few cock birds drifting through or being pushed into my yard.
