I'm in the market for good rain gear. Does anyone have some good suggestions? I own Frogg Toggs & like them but it was many years ago. Not sure if they've changed since the set I had. The tried the Whitewater brand & they were not rain gear They were more like just water resistant coat & pants. Worked great if it was just drizzling but in heavy rain, I got soaked! Plus the pocket zippers broke leaving me with having to cut new pocket access on the inside of the jacket I'm looking for something that's not a plastic shell, breathable & light weight for turkey hunting & fishing spring or summer time eye crossing lip ripping bass fishing. Any help

Mad Dog Gear, Growler series is what I have. Had it now for 2-3 years, and I've stayed dry every time I've had it on. It has a soft-shell outer layer which keeps it quiet, but takes a lot longer to dry. Only thing I don't really like about it is there's no slash pockets on the pants, no good way to access pants pockets under the rain pants, and the jacket pockets don't seem to be waterproof/tight. Oh, and the drawstring on the pants could be improved, IMHO, but is passable.
But, I think the set cost ~$60 or so at Sportsmans Warehouse, so they are more than worth it for the money.

Sitka gear baby!! Go big or go home wet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not a cheapskate by any stretch of the imagination....but for the price of that stuff....I'll be going home wet Remember going out with a trash bag over your body that you punched out arm/head holes in?? ;D yeah me too! I'm no "cheapskate" either & I have no issues with paying for a product that's worth it but $550 ($250 for pants & $300 for the jacket) is pretty BIG for just rain gear! Now Rivers West was mentioned as something to look into & I'm glad I was told about them They're still not cheap but the cost is definitely a lot easier to justify than the Sitka price, plus with a better warranty. I’m looking at the Spider Jacket & the Outlaw Pants. It’s a lite weight fleece but they both have zippered ventilation (underarms & crotch/inside the thighs) if I get too warm. In spring time I can & will dress for the proper temps. Right now they have a buy two pieces & get the second piece ½ off until June 3rd. So with the pants being $179.99 & the jacket being $169.99, it make my purchase of the pants only $84.99 for the jacket. At $264.98 for top & bottoms with the added perks I'm listing below, that's a price I can deal with. 10 year warranty, 1 year unbreakable & loaner for life policies I like a lot. For me, it says a lot & is a huge plus about a company’s product.

I love the sitka gear but it is expensive. I checked out the rivers west and that looks like great stuff plus the warranty is outstanding.
Just one thing to remember, the with the sitka gear you dont need to weak much underneath it. It is functional clothing that is water proof. Still a lot of money but it is very functional. My buddy at camp used his moose hunting last season and he liked it a lot. He liked being not having the bulk of the rain gear over the hunting clothes and said it much more comfortable as far as over heating and such.
Still a lot of money, I know!

Well I did my checking of the Rivers West rain gear today & the stuff has a huge all the way by me! I did a little searching on-line & found it $10 than what I posted above for jacket, pants & shipping. I'll be ordering it real soon & should have it next week....right about the time the drought starts ;D

I've gone away from most of the camo rain gear and have been using all of my GoreTex backpacking stuff. I just camo over the top if I need to. I used to work for Eastern Mtn Sports so I have several jackets and pants. The backpacking companies seem to specialize in this so I let them do what is best then buy the camo that I like. I'm doing the same thing for upland hunting. I hated the extra weight of a Filson jacket so now I just dress like I would to go for a hike and slip a bird vest on over the top. Working great so far.

Griff,
That is what we used to do in the Rangers. We had some of the first light weight and heavy weight gear available. It was noisy so we used to wear in under our uniform. You looked wet but stayed dry.
I still have a lot of Gortex that I still wear. I will have a hard time not buying something gortex in the future. It is so light and breathes so well. I cant stand putting on rain gear and getting all hot and sweaty from it. I mostly wear my scent blocker rain gear when its cold and windy just to cut the wind.
