Pardon my ignorance on this subject but I need to ask. I have a Maverick 88 (made by Mossberg) 12 guage, it came with a modified choke. If I want to shoot slugs with this gun, do I have to remove the choke tube? If I can use a choke tube with slugs, what type would be the best?

i am guessing that the choke is internal, do not remove the choke because the slug will mess up the threads that the choke screws into! and to the best of my knowledge, an improved cylinder choke should be used when shooting slugs. I would call a gun store and ask to be certain!

Great, thanks for the info. Now that you mention using an improved cylinder, that seems to ring a bell. The chokes are internal, it basically is a Mossberg 500 just with a synthetic stock. So far it's been a good reliable gun for under $200.00 at Walmart.

dano, In theory the more open choke you use the better a slug will fly. In reality it depends what the gun likes. I have seen slug guns that will only group with a modified choke. My suggestion would be to see how the gun groups with your mod. choke. If you do not like the results, spend your money on a rifled choke tube. They are designed to throw foster style slugs and do all right with sabots.

b4rifle hit it on the nose. Just go and spend the money and get a rifled choke. You cant imagine how much of an improvemnt you will see with them.
Then, buy several differend boxes of slugs and shoot each one at a paper target to se which groups the best. Even with a rifled choke, I have found that shotguns can be very finikey as to which slughs they like best.
