Does anyone know if a bear will swim across a body of water like a river or pond on their own? I know bears are not totally afraid of water but not sure how well they can swim. Being chased or after being shot doesn't count in this question. I'm sure any animal will bust across a body water under those situations.

Among the islands up the coast of British Columbia it is not uncommon to see black bears swimming between islands, in salt water. It's not an every day commonplace but it isn't rare. Some acquaintances of mine on a commercial seine boat eased the boat up to one as it swam and roped it.
