So I'm getting rather excited that some sort of season is opening soon (turkey ;D), unfortunately, after that we're all pretty much shut out until late summer/early fall...of course besides us folks that fish.
I'm getting some rather ambitious thoughts running through my head about deer and oddly as it may seem (even to myself) I've been thinking about bear...no, not beer, I always think about that, but the bear that we can hunt.
I know bear can be hunted by bow, but I'm curious as to just how difficult bear hunting is and what is involved. I know Vtdeertracker could help me out a little bit on this...I've seen his posts and pictures.
If I was going to do some bear hunting, it would not be from a stand and I wouldn't be using an electronic call and for my tools, I would be using a bow...what I'd like to know is how realistic is this to accomplish? There's a farm I hunt that has bear and beer for that matter. I saw many tracks last year in the fields and found some trees that looked like they have been shaved from about 8 feet up to about a foot or two off the ground and these were good 10"-12" diameter trees. So there is something going on there.

VT uses dogs. I'll let him explain because he knows what he's talking about. We're supposed to go up in June for a hunt. Maybe you can come too.
NH is closed to bear until September, correct?

Pemi,
I have two friends with whom I hunt with that spot and stalk bear. Both have taken several and never from a stand. They hunt beech ridges in the white mountains. One of the guys has a 5 yard kill on video!!

Regnar,
That's more of what I'd like to hear, that's the type of hunting I'd rather do.

Pemi.....Bear hunting wouldnt be too hard for you. All you have to do isfigure out what they are eating and hang a stand. I dont know about NH but here in VT you CANNOT bait for bears. Like Greenie said for a few "lucky" ones that get to use hounds for bear its a real experience that one would not soon forget. I have alot of respect for them hounds I mean for a 50-80lb dog to take on a 350-400lb bear is just unthinkable but they do it without hesitation! If you ever get a chance to go you wont regret it. I have taken only 1 with hounds and probably wont take another unless its a 500lber I just like working with the hounds and listening to them work!
