Hey guys right before Christmas I picked up a Johnny Stewart predator one electronic caller on sale for like 15 bucks. I tried it once and only called in a crap load of blue jays. I've been doing a lot of reading about predator hunting and ended up picking up a Jinny Stewart dog howler. I really want to give it a try but the problem is all the deer yards I hunt are really small and don't seem like they hold coyote. I live in Raymond and I'm not looking for anyone's honey hole but am looking for a place relatively close where I could practice some calling without waking everyone up in the neighborhood. My plan was to try the howler early in the morning at several different spots waiting for a howl and then target those spots with some rabbit distress/mouse squeaks from the electronic caller. Also, I know I keep mentioning coyotes as that is what I have been reading about the most but I'm also interested in fox. Thanks and please feed this new outdoor addiction!

you have some good ideas but let me give you mine.
Your howl then distress is a good plan but try to do your howls at night then hit that spot with the distress the next morning.
Be carefull when locate howling. Once you get a response, stop so you don't get caught and get made!!!
There are some spots that you can go and not wake up the dead.
If you want to hook up and hit some spots then let me know. No honey holes but just some spots that I have had OK luck in and are no secret to anyone!
Fox are fun also, small quiet distress sounds and be ready. They charge in fast. If you don't get a response within a couple minutes, they are not home. Go to a new spot. Grey Fox are the most aggressive Canine in our country.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. Trying at night is a good idea and fits in better with my schedule. I could howl on Friday night then go in closer with distress sounds on the weekend.
Now when you talk about howling at night are you driving around pulling off on the side of the road and pretty much howling right from the road? Are you walking in just a little bit? Does it vary? I've been thinking about driving around and just howling on the sides of some roads as a scouting exercise but I hate attracting attention. I know its legal but don't want to attract a crowd or disturb a neighborhood. I've also just started using the howler and don't feel very comfortable with it yet. Even though I'm far from the best deer hunter in the world I feel like I have a basic understanding of the game and I want to get there with predator hunting. Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the game! I'm in Barrington and I have a spot you can play in all you want. There is a pack in a set of woods I have been after near my house and you are welcome to chase them boys! It's a big plot of land and you can call all you want and no one will care. There are fox and coyote you can have fun with. If you want to locate do it at night. I have a few spots on this land I can show you and you can howl all night long. I an Dan can have you alone on one of our hunts if you want to tag alone. We use E-callers and decoys and hand held calls. Highwaystar

yes, pretty much. Drive around to your spots and shut off the truck and get out. Howl for a couple minutes and listen for a response. try to stay away from the barks or challenge howls. Just a long good howl will do. Tip: It is believed or pretty well known if you want that the eastern coyote will MOST times only howl back from core areas or home "turf" areas where they feel safe. Try to remember from what direction you heard that response and try to get as close to where you think that howling came from. Be quiet and carefull. Try your distress there. P.S. Highwaystar, wanna show me this spot that you speak off? EDIT: becarefull of me and highway star, we will have you buying top dollar E-callers in no time!!!!!!

Wow guys, I really appreciate your generosity and may have to take you up on your offer. Barrington is a very good location for me. Its not very far at all and I go to school at UNH Wednesdays and Thursdays. May hit it up someday after class. Sounds like you guys have some pretty impressive calling equipment. Just wondering do you guys use shotguns or rifles? I see from other posts you do some night hunting, mostly night hunting or day? Highwaystar, I'm not sure how secret this place is but if you feel comfortable pm me some info on the location so I can start getting some howling practice in and then maybe we can meet up. It sounds like a perfect, isolated location as long as my little mazda protege can make it there. You guys have weekends open? Thanks again.

Most day hunting, but do some night hunting too!
Highwaystar, I'm not sure how secret this place is but if you feel comfortable.
Were I hunt is open to anyone who wants to hunt. I will share all I know. Why? It is just a better time with someone who likes it as much as I do.
You guys have weekends open?
Sure do. At least one of the 2 days for sure. Hunt nights during the week Too!

I have a Savage Predator Model 10 in .223 and a Remington 700 in .243. I'd love to join you guys on one of your hunts to see what "normal" coyotes do. Browning can fill you in on the pack that I chase around - really strange doggies.
