I have been hunting all my life and never had this happen before. Last deer season I was bow hunting, when it got dark I climb down the tree and started to pack up my stand. I heard some yipes from a yote but didn't pay to much attention to it. I was putting my stand on my back when I realized I could see them runnig around. I figured they would run off when I started to walk away, but they followed me for quite awhile. I try and stay as scent free as possible, so I feel this dogs just didn't know what I was. I have often question there intention. Any body have any clues.

hey scout--- some people could debate this answer but I think the chances of being attacked by coyotes are pretty slim. Now you say that they followed you for a good distance and that you stay scent free, Thats probably just it, they were probably just trying to figure you out.. The NH website says that there are no records of coyote attacking humans in the state. I have heard stories of people shooting deer and when getting to the deer it turned into a stand off between the hunter and a pack of coyotes, the hunter always wins... (hunters sometimes have weapons!) But no I don't think coyotes will attack and It would take EXTREME circumstances for a coyote to challenge a human. If you wanna tell me where that spot is I would be happy to come take out some coyotes for ya!!!!! ;D

I agree with Browning204. It would have to be an extreme case.
The only two ways i could see it happening is if you somehow cornered one or if you got to close to a den.
One day several years ago I was stand hunting during deer season. It was about 1:00 so i broke out a sandwich. About 5 min. later a coyote comes walking my way so i let him come. He got within 6 feet of me. I turned my head and said "Hello". You would have though i lit a fire under his ass. ;D He never knew i was there and he wasn't waiting around.

I have heard of coyote attacks, but they tend to be in areas where coyotes don't feel threatened by people, normally suburbs. Around here if a farmer or hunter sees them and has a rifle he will normally shoot the coyote. Coyotes around here don't give things a second thought when it comes to people in the area. I don't know this from personnal experience but have read a lot about it.

YES I have to heard of coyote attacks, but not in NH. I have heard about them in cali. and even ma. Like you said troutpro, it seems to happen in more city like settings. Now NH has city like settings but to my knowledge and as I said the NH F&G site states that it has never happened. I am not saying F&G knows all, but stuff like that will get around if it does happen.
Did you guys hear about that guy who was shot while yote hunting at night? I think it was out west somewhere.. If you want I will post a link...

The sandwich thing can't be a coincidence. I would like to place an order, please send it rush delivery!! ;DLOL
On the serious side, I have been hearing a lot of stories about human/yote conflicts in the communities around Boston. Seems to me that they need a crew of coyote killers down there to take care of the problem. All of the stories involve the yotes coming after the family pet. I have yet to hear a local story of problems involving attacks on people.
Personally, I have had yotes attack one of my beagles while we were chasing bunnies. The yotes took off when they heard me coming and I never got a shot off. A trip to the vet, a few stitches, shots and the dog was fine. I have to give the little pup credit, she put up a good fight and broke off a tooth in one of the yotes.

Good for that beagle putting up a fight! I watched a thing on TV about canines one day, and they were comparing a domestic dog to a typical coyote.
It basically said that if a coyote attacks a similarly sized dog that the domestic dog will almost always win the fight. the domestic dog could even take on two yotes depending on its age and ability. WHY??
they said because a domestic dog knows it has more to fight for, if it loses then its done! It fights for itself and its owner but a yote will fight until hurt or tired and then think, forget this, I can just run and hide and it's just not worth getting hurt over... yotes are opportunists they want an easy meal, not one they have to work at!!
