What a morning. We were on stand about 7:30 with the snow still falling and about 8" new on the ground the sky was gray and the wind in our face it was perfect. Dan went to the high ground and I set the WT on the edge of the thick stuff in the clear cut. Just a good setup. Started with Coyote sounds for 5-8 min then to distress. Coyote sounds full volume distress 3/4. Dan's shot made me jump as I could not see the coyotes, Yes, Coyotes 3, that Dan saw, one was Black. He made a great shot about 125 yds. With the shot I went to full volume and played coyote sounds. But, no takers. Good Stuff Highwaystar

Nice looking pelt, too. What rig was Dan shooting?

Masshntr,
Rig of choice is a Remington Model 700 Left hand 243 Win topped with a Kahles 2.5-10x50 CB scope. Using a handloaded 75 grain V-Max, it hit behind the right shoulder and exited just forward of the left hip. Going to skin'er out and see how the bullet performed.
The dogs didn't want to come out of the tree line. I had cover in my way to see them sitting on their arses watching the caller and turkey decoy. I noticed the black one heading off into the woods by an opening further to my left (must have had enough) and I thought we were done for the day when this female follows and turns to stop and look back. Had to turn the scope up to 10 power to get a good bead on her.
Steve and I want that black one... Maybe in a couple of weeks!

I am glad that your coyotes are showing themselves! Omega and I have been working these 3 family groups for a while now. We are getting huge vocal responses but they do not come into gun range. We need to expand our calling areas but we both have work and families and scouting days are far and few between. Congrats!!

Good luck with the black one. Make a nice trophy. Saw a coal black wolf in Montana while elk hunting a few years ago... In fact he and the bitch pretty well did in our hunt. Huge guy. Had him at 100 yards standing with the .30/06 but, of course, they're "protected" because they're "endangered".

Dan and I lucked out this past few weeks as we had the same time off. We each scout as we can and get togeather to check a hot spot one of us might find. I locate at night with the WT as much as I can. Then with that I use google earth and terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=12&Z=19&X=418&Y=5976&W=1&qs=%7cbarrington%7cnh%7c maps. With that I e-mail them to Dan and we both come up with a plan as how we will get in there and set up a stand. With the maps we find points and funnels what ever we can us to get close to a coyote. Also, look for a spot where the coyotes might have their comfort zone. Most often the thick stuff. When we come up with a spot, I print out the map and have it with us at the site. We don't have as much time as we would like but, when we do, most of the work is done and we can be more efficient we the time we have. Night time will tell you a lot as you locate and also we hunt a lot at night Jan-March. browning204 "Got Permits" or what? On this coyote. Without Dan on a good stand. This coyote would still be Running around, as I didn't see a thing, I was watching the back door. After, we walked over the site, all the tracks were to the edge, one was even sitting. In all I used 8 differant sounds in a 10-15 min set, till Dan shot. The weight of this one, Well maybe 35# I guess. Maybe Dan can weight it. I'll ask him to and see if he will post it. Luck. Maybe. But, I like to think we as a team are learning and getting better and I am getting better at talking to the animals with my WT caller. Highwaystar

I called F&G and the law enforcement guy didn't see any records of me. He gave me the # to dispatch to call if they don't show up. I will probably call tomorrow, I mailed them in mid november.

another problem is, in my area it is not easy to just jump in the truck and go howl up an area. Well, not without the cops showing up. Most hunting spots around here I hunt on someone Else's stories " oh man, I heard coyotes going crazy last night" most accounts are false or misleading.
I can go to a place near me and get a vocal response every single time, but 9 out of 10 times I or we get skunked. They WHERE there that night but now gone, vanished, Nada.
It's hard in this area, the coyotes tuck themselves in near the houses or roads and I swear they can read no hunting signs because they go hide out in those areas.
I am also hesitant to jump in the truck and find a patch of woods that I don't know. Even tho there are no posting signs, I wouldn't want to piss off any land owners. That is a sure way to ruin it for alot of people.
I do have a couple more spots to check out, but as said, family and work keep me moving almost 24/7.
I would love to stumble across an area that produces fur more regular for me.

Weighed in the doggie today... A disappointing 26 lbs... Nevertheless, I will skin her out on Friday (next day I actually have a couple hours free during daylight).
