If you had a choice, which caliber would you choose; the .22-250 or the .223? I like the .22-250 but what are your thoughts? Any of you have experience of what the performance is also? Thank you in advance!

tough choice! if I had to buy one it would be the 22/250. I really do not have hands on experiance with either but from all the reading I have done, the 22/250 seems to be an awesome round. I would have got one if I didn't go with the .204...

I would personally chose the 22/250. the .223 is a very good round though. If I was going to use the gun for larger game also I would chose the .223.

I would be using the .22/250 for coyotes and smaller game, nothing bigger than that. Is it adequate enough to drop a 60 pound coyote? I think the round is plenty potent enough to do the job but i've never seen it in action. Thank you guys for the input.

JUST my thoughts, but uhnless you plan on taking 300+ yard shots (something difficult to do in the NE) than the 223 is what I would go with. It is alot more fun to shoot becuase of recoil or lack of it.

The .223. I also shoot the .243. Both are plenty for the shots I take, since I refuse to shoot past 200 yards. Most are taken under 100.

I like the 243 for coyotes here in NH. A bit much on Fox though. If you are set on a 22/250 for coyote hunting, you will want a sporter barrel and a short barrel at that. You don't want to be carrying a heavy barreled gun all day, and they are tough to swing well in the thick stuff. The 223 is nice also, but unless you are getting an EBR (evil black rifle AKA something like the AR 15 style guns) you should probably go with the 22/250. Better yet. get yourself a nice short barrled lighweight 243. You will be able to take long shots on windy days and most coyotes will drop when hit solid. Al@THO THO Game Calls www.thogamecalls.com |

This is a question that I have been researching for a long time. I own one of each, a custom Mauser 98 in 22-250 and a target grade AR in .223. You can not compare the two rifles because each one has it's intended purpose.
The 22-250 weights in at 12 pounds and is set up to make shots at 250 to 500 yd range. I primarily use it at bait sites and open country calling. At the 150 yd range and less the bullet is very explosive.
The AR in .223 is a short 18in stainless steel bull barrel and a ballistic reticle to reach out when needed. Most people think that a .223 is a short range cartridge. However it is capable to reach out, well past the ability of most shooters. With the .223 you really have to be locked on to range and wind speed as you get targets at extended ranges. With this rifle I use it for areas where I am in multiple types of terrain and using many calling sites. Using the .223 I can make fairly quick calculations and hit shots out to 300 yd. I can make shots a little further out, but it takes more time and set up to make them count.
So it is not a matter of which one is better. It is more which one fits your situation and fills your needs.
