Went out this morning to test the new WT on a co-worker's property in Maine (just bought my ME license). Set the fur and the caller up at the bottom of this hill at the edge of a swamp. travel trails were going across the clearing and it was about 0 out.
Started off with the mouse to get a feel for it. I had a large pile of dirt and stumps blocking me from the downwind side. Went to a crow distress for a bit, then wanted my crow mobbing. I inadvertently called up coyote young female and then after about 10-15 seconds switched to crow mobbing. I paused it after a bit, then off to my left coming upwind was a doggie. Unfortunately, I was broadside exposed and froze. The dog was white and grey and probably about 30 lbs. My had was frozen on the remote so I pushed play and let the sound go. The dog did not see me and was focused on the sound. after about 10 seconds, it realized I was not part of the ground cover and started to lope off. Being lefty I was already at a disadvantage, but turned and pulled the trigger on a bad shot. Pissed at myself I didn't wait, and went to collect my stuff. When I arrived at my truck, the dog was just barking up a storm down by where the decoy was. I stalked back as best I could, but then it went silent so I just packed it up.
Next stand had fox tracks around and I know a dog is in the area, but nothing came.
I will be revisiting the first spot in a couple of weeks...

I didn't mention that the dog was only about 20 ft away from me did I? I could have thrown a rock at it.

Not bad for your first trip with the new caller!!!
Trust me, I know that being froze and helpless feeling. I missed on a coyote that was 10 feet from me because of it.
I still sometimes twitch when thinking about it!

At least you got to see the coyote. Hearing about everyones success has got me thinking about trying to get out still.

I hunt coyotes any time I can. Summer included but the skeeters are wicked! Ya, everyone loves my WT. Before people would call me to go hunting, now people call and say "can your WT hunt next weekend?" It's a good caller, provided there are coyotes there to call!!!!!

Browning - you have to be there - we need your WT !!
Whoever knows where there are coyotes gets to call the day. The dogs I've been chasing the last 5 months have all but disappeared. They've moved to a spot about 6 miles away from their original location and I don't have permission to hunt there.
