My dad, my little sister, and I went wood chuck hunting yesterday evening. First field I shot one woodchuck and my dad shot one.
We then went to a field that had just finished being mowed about 20 minutes before we went there. Sat down for about 5 minutes on a small hill, I turned around just incase a wood chuck was behind us and spot a coyote sticking its head out of the corn 50 yards away. I tell my dad, load my gun, spin on my butt to face it and my safety was on! Before I could get my rifle centered on its chest again, BANG!. My dad shot it with his .223 wssm. Very large entrance whole no exit. 2 minutes later my dad tried a 400 yard shot on a woodchuck and missed. 5 minutes after there I turn to my right and another coyote running in the field next to us about 200 yards away. Tell my dad to take the shot since he had a longer range rifle than I did. He rushed it and missed when the coyote was at a slow trot. 10 minutes later just about to go and I spot a woodchuck at 350 yards. My dad shoots and misses, I told him it went high, so it tried again nailing the woodchuck. I go to retrieve it, get there and it is gone! Find blood and trail it under a row of grass. See movement so stomp on its head. Well, stomping on its head didn't work so my dad had to come and finish the job. It was a big woodchuck and had a huge exit hole from the first time my dad hit it. No clue how that thing was able to live with a 6" by 4" exit wound.
Had a great day, and my little sister really enjoyed it.
