Hey guys went out calling tonight. We had bears with bows on the menu so we set up down along an old brook that had a couple bogs along side that created a bottle neck. The set up was perfect as far as setup and wind. We put the caller about 20 feet in front of us and had pretty good visibility down through trees in both directions with the brook to our backs. We were sitting on the ground again and I kinda learned a lesson tonight in being prepared BEFORE you start the caller. I was fumbling around with my therma cell (if you haven't tried one you need to as they work awesome on bugs) and about 2 minutes into calling had a coyote almost run over us. I wasn't up on my stool yet and was sitting on my butt so when he came in I was taking a shot from a very awkward sideways position . He came in hard and fast and ran right next to my WT speaker. He seemed to like sound of the snowshoe rabbits misfortune. After I shot my bow he glanced over and ran about another 30 feet and paused looking back then scrambled into high gear. Andre my step son hadn't seen him coming but had seen me draw back and he didn't quite have enough time to shoot. I tried to coax him back with coyote puppy distress but he wanted nothing to do with it. Along about the time we were coming to the end I put on some Female coyote howls, and male response followed up by the group rally call. I then decided it was time to pack it up when all of a sudden the other side of the brook came alive with coyote yapping at us on the other side. There was no way to get to them tonight but I know where they live now and the songs they like to hear ;D. Not as exciting as bears but still loads of fun.
