Hey guys its been a while since my last post last winter what with the travel my work requires etc. I haven't had a lot of time, however I got back out in the the woods this weekend and was doing some bear calling. Some of you may remember the bear called in last year and little video clip. Well I took my step son out bow hunting bear with me yesterday and got down in along this brook in a heavily wooded area. We had a decent view down stream and about 25- 30 yards of a clearing with ferns in front of us. I had my Wildlife Technologies Caller with us so we got comfortable on the ground and started calling. We began with the owls and crow sounds. It wasn't long and we had crows dive bombing down through the trees and the woods felt completely alive. We had fun with those foolish birds for quite a while. At about an hour or a little more we started playing more distress sounds and coyote sounds as well and just as I was taking a pause I just had the feeling like I had heard something but didn't know what. It was kinda like a rubbing against brush sound but couldn't tell which direction it came from. The hackles on the back of my neck were standing up a little bit. I looked down at my son and he was almost drifting off so I told him about it and to be alert. About 15 minutes latter we heard this splashing down stream and we both looked at each other with what was that? I looked and didn't see anything so I started with some baby bear distress then some more blue jay sounds. I just happened to look downstream to my right and saw a bear climbing up the hill about 60 yards away after coming from the direction of the brook. It had actually crossed both of our paths that we had walked in on an hour and a half earlier. I tried to point it out to Andre but he didn't see it by the time it made it up into the thick trees. I switched my sounds to a snowshoe in distress and within 5 minutes he whispered look there she is and she has a cub. She was zeroed in on the sound that was 20-30 feet out in front of us. I let her come down to 28-30 yd and decided that was close enough for a sow with cubs and touched off my "Peace Maker" its a .454 Ruger Alaskan I picked up this year for just such occasions. Of course I didn't shoot her and fired off to the side to ward her off. The cub was pretty small and being the kind of hunter I am didn't want to be in a scenario where she got too close and nasty and have to be in a situation where I had to doing something I would regret. She didn't run but rather just turned and walked off like she was annoyed but not a bit scared. I have to say he and I were pretty jacked up over that and there is just not another animal out there (around here anyhow) that gets me feeling like that. Even as much fun as coyotes are to call they don't come close to the feeling when one of these come in. Good luck to you all as the season starts to wind up.
