I took a ride to MA a few weekends ago for a little turkey scouting, crow thumpin & maybe a coyote with masshntr. As you can tell by this post title, the coyote part paid out & I got to christen my Tacoma with a 46.5lb blonde male coyote. My first set up on him I couldn’t get a clear shot. Second set I was really out of breath from running up a hill & was not comfortable taking over a 300yd shot. We went around to the back side of the field he ran into him. I had 150yd shot which I missed because I was still out of breath from the first run & trying to get a good set up for the 150yd shot. My bi-pod wasn’t ideal but I thought I could correct it with my aim point but that didn’t work. It probably would have but I was just way too winded to be shooting. I quit smoking back in August after 30+ years &I still don’t have my wind back or in shape. Well “good shape” that is because I am plenty round & that’s a shape
Anyways, the coyote went back to original field heading for a river bottom filed. I got a pretty good prone rest & my bi-pod set up was right on the money. As he was totting along the hedgerow he stopped for a quick look at us before possible dropping into the lower river bottom. That quick pause was a huge mistake for him because it gave me the 2 seconds needed to settle my crosshair & touch off a round.
My T/C Venture 22-250 spitting a Winchester 55gr ballistic silver tip dropped his ass on the snow as if someone took him to sit. His head flipped back & he was tapped out!! We figured out the range of the shot at roughly 253 to 260yds. The shot wasn’t where I was holding but at that distance, under the conditions & time I had to set up for the shot…8in to the right of my aim POA isn’t bad. This by far is my farthest shot ever on a coyote & I'm glad I've got a wittiness to crazy, long shot & unbelievable hunt
My taxidermists is doing me trapper cape & sending the skull out to Beetle Works.
