After an awesome morning hunt and midday with the family, I decided to get Jake out for at least one crow hunt. He doesn’t have his camos yet so I took along a chair and some camo netting for him to sit back and watch. After about 45 minutes the only thing flying making noise was about 50 geese, some ducks and hundreds of crackles.
It didn’t matter much because we were having a great time talking about hunting safety, gun safety, crows, hunting crows, how to shoot them, the decoys, the calls and just about everything else under the evening sun that we saw. I was trying to keep him interested because the crows just were not flying.
About 10 minute after I gave him a time deadline of packing it in, I spotted a silent crow coming in from my left along the tree line. I told Jake coming in from the left…don’t move! I got my gun up getting a good lead on him and then kaboooom!! The crow takes the ole death spin trip to the cornfield edge and thumps about 8 yards in front of us. Jake screams out a loud YEAH DADDY…YOU GOT HIM!!
Well that was the end of our hunt and my early season crow hunting. Jake and I spent next 30 minutes looking at the crow, gathering feathers for school and talking about the hunt over all. ABSOLUTLY AWESOME!! I got to spend a quality hour plus (perfect amount of time so they stay interested) of hunting with my son and it ended up just like I was hoping for, Jake getting to see a crow in the death spin….priceless in my book
