You don't need a long action round for a 100 yard gun. I gave my father a .308 Encore pistol last year, it is way more than capable of doing what you need. His experience with pistols prior to this one was mostly limited to whatever training he had in the USMC back in the mid-70's. I think he had put less than a box of ammo through it before he used it on something other than paper- a groundhog at ~250 yards! Honestly, if all you are wanting is something for 100 yards or so, a .44 mag is more than enough. If you don't reload and definitely want a bottleneck cartridge, then I don't think I'd be looking at anything any bigger than a .308. The recoil on Dad's Encore is straight back and isn't bad at all. Honestly, I think the recoil on my Contender 7 TCU (a .223 case necked up to 7 mm and blown out) is sharper than the .308 Encore. It's an issue of weight- the Encore weighs more and has 5" more barrel than the Contender.

I had a 7/30 waters that I could hit clay pigeons with at the 300m berm at Major Waldrons. Very nice recoil, very accurate and it was a lot of fun to shoot. I never killed any big game with it but there is a guy who used to be a member there who killed a bear and a deer in NH with it the same year then went out west and shot antelope and prairie dogs with it.

.30-30 and 7mm-08 would be fine. 7-30 Waters is good too, the only issue is finding loaded ammo on a consistent basis. If you reload that's not an issue. .25-06 is a long action round and way more than you'd need in an Encore. The issue with a .30/30 is finding bullets that aren't meant for a tube-fed gun. You'll get way more from a .30/30 in a single shot if you use spitzer type bullets.
7-30 and .30-30 are available in the Contender as well as Encore, .7-08, .308, both of the '06's are only Encore.
If I was going to get an Encore for myself I'd probably be looking at a .257 Roberts, .308 or a .358 Winchester. I reload though, so finding ammo isn't an issue.

Ya know, here's where one particular cartridge would shine, but always takes the back seat because of the guns it's always offered in. The .35 Rem. There's a whole host of bullets available now for the reloading and brass is cheap and easy to find. It's a wonderful cartridge and capable of so much more than what the lever guns it's chambered are. In a single shot pistol or a bolt gun it's on par with the .308 but fires a 200gr bullet, and makes a nice .35 caliber hole. It's such an under rated game cartridge. Quite accurate too due to the bullet grain, case capacity ratio.

I don't disagree with that assessment at all. In fact, the .35 Rem is on my "list" of barrels I eventually want for my Contender.
However, since he mentioned the Pro Hunter, that means an Encore. If he was looking at a Contender, the .35 Rem and the .30/30 would likely be at the top- especially if he reloaded. There's several chamberings available in the Encore that offer more in factory loadings than you'll get out of either of those two in the Contender.
