Hi guys, I'm brand new to the site and am very glad there's a dog section on here. I really love hunting dogs of all breeds, colors, and styles. I equally like training dogs, and watching a new dog click at whatever their life's game is going to be. I've spent a lot of time with bird dogs and coon hounds. I still coon hunt occasionally although I'm down to just one hound these days...looking forward to chasing fisher this winter if the conditions are right. Since we're almost into bird season I thought I'd make my first post about my bird dog Roux. She's an English Setter and a real sweetheart, I'm proud of her! This is a video I made probably a month ago while training...Oct 1 can't get here soon enough! I'm looking forward to reading about everyone else's dogs and hearing about how their season is going. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2VJ0WkWr9g&feature=player_embedded

Cool clip Mike I’m coming up on the time that I’ll be making a lot more post in the Man’s Best Friend board. My youngest will b e 3 this x-mas so it’s time to start dog shopping. I’ve posted before, I’d like a nice bird dog but think it would be really sweet is if I could train a GSP or versatile dog to rabbit hunt. I head to WV for “wabbit hunting” with my buddy Raymond & we pound the thickets to get his beagles on rabbits. Well Raymond & I pound the thickets; everyone else we take seems to walk around the briars Anyway, I’d love to have a dog that could point rabbits & then let Raymond’s dogs take over the chase. I was talking to him just tonight about setting up this years rabbit trip early this year & not on the last weekend. It's a blast heading down hunting with his dogs

Nice clip Mike! I head up to Maine tomorrow to test my Griffon Gus in a NAVHDA utility test. I ran him through the whole test today and he did very well. His duck search and retrieve has gotten very solid, he swam today for 15 minutes expanding his search across the whole pond then came back with the crippled duck after an extended chase. I then moved on to proof him to be steady in a duck blind. He needs to stay put while I walk out of his sight and shoot twice, then retrieve a thrown duck. Lastly he had to find and point 4 birds and be steady to shot and fall and retrieve to hand.
My fingers are crossed that he does as well on Friday as he did today.
I'll post up my results next week.
Jim

Sweet, another Setter! I have a 4 month old Llewellin Setter I am slowly bringing along, Neely wont be quite eady to go this season but next year he should be a bird hunting machine! My Yellow Lab. Tama is semi retired due to some seizures that fried a circuit and killed his nose and drive, sumbitch loves hunting the fields with Dad though...cant bear to fully retire him yet. Good luck this season! HANK

Gus decided to put the screws to me just to show me he still can. He had a perfect score except for the retrieve of drag portion. The judge drags a dead duck about 60 yards across a field and into the woods. Then you send your dog to retrieve it. It's a simple obedience drill to see what happens when the dog is out of site. Some dogs bury the duck, some pee on it....Gus took a perfect line when I sent him right up the scent trail over the hilltop and into the woods. He came running back just as enthusiastically but without the duck. I heard the judges gasp. Everyone thought he was going to come back with it. Apparently the judge said he went right to it and decided he didn't like the smell and didn't want to retrieve today. You can't get hard on your dog in the test so I just had to resend him nicely and he chose to balk again.
Gus 1 Jim zero.
Oh well...Now that means we just get to keep training more! If he would have passed I wouldn't know what to do with him.

Good luck this season! HANK Hi Hank. You're in the same boat I was a little bit ago. I had a Yellow Lab male named Hunter, just had him put down back in July. He was 14 years old and was my buddy. He was retired for 2 years, hunted up until he was 12. The last 2 years it was too rough on his body to take him hunting. It was a heart breaker to leave him home! I swear he could smell you take the shotgun from the gun safe and he was up hopping around like a pup wanting to go so badly. It's for the best to retire them, otherwise they'll just hurt themselves. Neely sounds like a nice young prospect for sure. Any photos of the lil guy?

I bet he passes the next one!
