Here is a picture of a beaver hut with the feedbed to the right of the hut. This is a picture of the dam after the rain. if you look you can see one of my traps on a long stand that I could not retrieve. I set it off from the top with that big stick. Here is the blankets I caught from that dam.

Cool pics Mike Don't laugh at me but what's a feedbed? Is it a trapping term for hut entrance?

I never laugh at a question Tom. The feed bed is where the beaver will drag brush to in the fall for winter feeding. They will work hard to get enough there in case they are lock in. This particular hut had a feed bed and they had a way to get out from under the ice. I tried trapping this lodge in late December with no luck. Traps were set for around 5 days. My partner when back in in late January and found out they were coming out, so we set up on it again. After 7 days we caught a 2 year old, then 7 days later the day before the big rain storm we got the 2 adults.
Coalman! These guys are already drying on the board. I have 2 more to do tomorrow I will try and remember to take some pictures of the process.

I don't eat beaver meat. I would like to try it though. I use 2 to 3 carcasses for my bear baits and cut off all the shoulders and rear legs for fisher trapping. I use small pieces of meat for mink trapping. It all gets used up trust me. Sorry to hear your out of the country. I almost had to got to Canada for the whole month of April. Lucky my boss turkey hunts, I told him I would not be able to put him in front of a bird this year if I couldn't scout.

I'm sitting for my trapping ed class on the 10th of April. I really wish I would have done it last year. I was not working all fall and could have spent quite a few days running a trap line.

NH, if you are like me and are stubborn, like long hours, little sleep, and a lot of physical work for almost no pay....you'll love it! You are welcome on my line any day.

Actually, april is good, it will take you until fall to get things together, do your homework and scout. Any questions on land trapping, just ask.

Thanks, I'm sure I'll take you up on that. I live down in Peterborough just off the contoocook river. So I'll be trapping that and some land that a friend owns up the hill from the river. I've seen a ton of beaver action in the area and a few mink as well. I'm 48 a little late for getting started but I'm in pretty good shape for humping trapping gear in and out of the woods. Worked for Eastern Mountain Sports for a few years so I have all the gear to be comfortable in the woods in the cold too. Ice just finally broke up last night on the river so despite a foot of snow still on the ground, it looks like spring may actually be coming!

Coalman,
I was just reading about that set in trapper's post. How do you know where a good location for that pole is?
