I have been very patiently hunting the big 10 pointer that I have pictures of this summer. I have seen him twice (the only two bucks I have seen this year other than the one I bumped) but no shots with the bow. I don't even have him on camera for a long time.
Well I found fresh scrapes last weekend around my blind. I decided to hang a couple cameras and a stand a little way from the ground blind last monday and leave it.
Well I was gone to camp since Friday. I was at camp cutting up two moose that have been hanging in a cooler since opening weekend. I only hunted once and that was Saturday night with the muzzle loader. It was a great sit. very cold and a very steady snow. I saw two does but they were to far for the bow and can shoot them up there. When I left there was a good inch on the ground. I got back to camp and brought the gun in, wiped it down and started to enjoy camp a bit.
This morning I hunted the ground blind for a couple hours. When I left I checked both cameras. The one next to the ground blind had several does and one small buck at 15 yards in front of the blind, but all in the early am. The camera at the new stand had these movies on it. (CLICK TO VIEW)
Two different bucks for sure and maybe a third. Several does and a nice tom.
Well I rushed of to work and banged everything out and was able to get back in the woods by 3:45. This stand is right on powerlines that the farmer keeps bush hogged and about 50 yards off the alpha field. It just feels good. About 20 of I see a deer in the woods between the powerlines and the field. I cant tell what it is or what it is looking at so I sit still, grab the bow and wait. It seemed like a while but soon the deer started walking towards me. The trail would put it 15 yards in front of me up wind. I can no see it is a buck and look at it with the binos. BIG WIDE HEAVY 10!!
I watch the buck hit the edge of the powerlines. Instead of crossing he turned and paralleled them away from me. Quick grunt and no response. No problem, I put the bow down, grab the muzzle loader and wait for him to cross the skidder trail 70 yards away. When he hits the trail he stops and starts rubbing a sappling with his forehead. I pull the hammer back, settled in on his shoulder, squeeze and PLOOOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!. I hear the bullet go out and hit the ground but only the primer went off WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!
The deer looks up and around. He stands there a bit and continues rubbing his forehead. I reload real quick and look up. He is now coming at me. I settled in on his chest at about 20 yards and start to think. Is the bullet really out of the barrel? Is there still a full charge in there plus the new charge? Well touching one off with two bullets in the barrel did not seem like a good thing so I hunt the gun up and grabbed the bow again. By now the buck is 10 yards in front of me on the edge of the powerline making a new scrape. I have zero shot as it is two thick. He finishes up and continues walking up the powerlines away from me.
When I got home I took the gun apart and this is what I found.
Well I did hear the bullet go down the barrel and hit the ground. But the powerbelt base was still on too off two moist pellets and I had fresh charge on top of that. I am REALLY glad I did not pull that trigger.
New rule for me. If I hunt in the rain or snow, I am pulling the breach plug and changing the pellets!!!!
