I must say for those that wish to make the move to hunting with climbing sticks, the ones at Dick’s are fine I got a great present from my mother-in-law so I put it use & bought a few thing yesterday. I picked up a new trail camera, a set of climbing sticks w/the extension & a new UA beanie. I’m putting the sticks together between keeping an eye on Nicholas (so it’s not together yet) but it seems its going work out great In fact out of all the sticks I own, beside my API set this one just my be my next favorite set. So for the money, I thought I’d pass it along seeing it’s a deal you just can’t bet. I know I'll be buying up several more here soon and start converting all my stands over to sticks. It sure makes getting in/out of my set a hell of lot easier & quieter now that I'm an old guy ;D

Are you talking portable sticks or the more permanent ones?

These sticks www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4110084&cp=2367438.2367824.2292572.2292573They are portable because all you need to do is break them down and throw over your shoulder. I'm useing several of them with my lock-on treestands. A few stands I leave out (locked) & if they get stolen...oh well Not much I can do other than hope to catch them. Two of my stands I carry in and out as I hunt the location but the sticks stay in 24/7. If they take them I'm only out $50 instead of the sticks & stands.

No way I would call them portable!!!! To much hassle to move around especially when its warm.
I know that I will get bit sooner or latter but I am up to 4 sets of lone wolfs, 3 buck steps and one rapid rail. I take a few of the stands in and out with the sticks but most rest stay for the season and I remove the sticks after its over. the ones I leave out I use mostly as an observation stand and then either move it or go in with another. When I find a great place for a permanent stand I set up set like thoughs or screw ins.

Call them what every you like You know, it doesn’t surprise me that you would have a different definition for portable. For me, I have no issues with stacking, strapping and carrying these set of sticks anywhere in the woods. I carry my lock-on with shoulder straps, throw the sticks over my shoulder and grab my bow to head out to where ever I wish to hunt. Now according to most, that would called being Port´a`ble I guess I could get another strap and strap them to my Lone Wolf or Summit stand so I can carry them just like the Lone Wolf sticks & be just like you…portable.

I got a set of the Summit Bucksteps at a shop that was closing them out. They were still $60 and I really don't find them that great. It's a pain to attach all 4 sections you either have to climb back down and get another section or pull one up on a rope. They do have the advantage of being able to go around limbs and things and that's great, but they are heavy and loud to carry out to the woods along with a climber.
I think I'll pick up a set of the Dick's steps and then maybe use a section of the Buck steps on top to get even higher in some stands.
Thanks for the heads up on the sale Tom.

Relax there bud, Im not dis in ya. I only asked because if dicks had something like a LW or Summit I would go and take a look. They are nice but a little to expensive. Oh I'm relaxed It's just that it came off as their not portable & they are. You know how it goes....the sky's blue today....no it's not! I just had to let you know that even though they might not be as compact as the Lone Wolf sticks, that they are still portable. Did a little checking on google & NexTag popped up a lot of different prices so I took the top two for Lone Wolf sticks & Mini sticks to compare prices. Lone Wolf 3 Mini Sticks 17" long...$110 w/1 piece 17" extension sticks costing $45 = $155 Lone Wolf set of 4 (normally sold only in 3) Climbing Sticks 32" long... $170Comfort Zone 16' Stick $34.98 w/1 piece 4' extension $19.99 = $54.97So please tell me how does that come out as being too expensive My math shows me this.....with your 4 sets of Lone Wolf sticks (with an average price of $130 for a set of 3), you could have saved $300 dollar by buying 4 sets of the so called non-portable sticks. That's $300 bills you could put towards a guided hunt or your grocery bill in Ohio ;D I like Lone Wolf stands & their products But in these "Obama times" & with the way I like to have things, I've got to shop around for the best deal I can find. So when I find something that's not exspensive & does an awesome or better job then the big named products, I'm all over it. Not only will I be all over it but I'll pass along what I found to others

Seriously, I was saying the LW are a bit on the expensive side. Of course they are portable but I certianley would not want to pack them in and out every time I hunted.
Not sure about those prices but I just bought a set of 3 LW's at dicks for 119, same price as the gorilla sticks. I can get them at the archery shop for 110 when he as them in stock and he did not have any left.
NHgriff, here is what I do. I hang the first one. Then I tie a rope from my stand to my harness. I than tie the pull up rope from the stand to my bow. I hang the first step and then loop the steps over my shoulder at different lengths so they dont make noise. I climb up and use my linesmen harness and attach the next step and so on. When I am at the top, I pull up the stand, set it and climb in. I get situated and then pull up my bow. I goes pretty quick once you do it a few times. I do the same with the LW sticks except I hang them off my harness. If you dont like them and want to sell them let me know.

Yeah well it’s hard to tell from your comment on other things plus seeing the main sticks in the post & topic was the Comfort Zone sticks. I guess it is my fault for “assuming” your comment was about the CZ sticks seeing you already stated that you wouldn’t call then portable. As for the small pieced climbing sticks like the Lone Wolfs, Gorilla, Muddy and Bucksteps. Their great for going up imperfect trees but I have yet to find a location that I can't make work with regular sticks. NHGriff, good idea with adding a something on top to get a little higher. That might be the only way I'd even buy those small sticks (for my current sticks). I'm going to be buying at least three more sets after the season is over & they go on sale. I think when I do, I'll be getting 5 of the extra 4' extentions just in case I need to get up higher in two of the sticks I rarely find myself needed to go higher than 20' but it never hurts to have it if I need to.

No problem. And for the record, my OH hunts are NOT guided, strictly do it your self.

No for your Ohio hunt but for an Elk hunt I'm trying to put away a few dollar here & there for a trip out west within the next few years.
