If you were going to buy a new rifle, which of the following would you get? Caliber would be either a 30-06 or 300 Win Mag. More interested in accuracy than looks. Not concerned if it's stainless or not, but do want a synthetic stock.
Savage Weather Warrior Model 116
Ok now that you picked one, what would you top it with?
I'm not sure what to tell you seeing I have not shot each of those gun to compare I can't see you going wrong with any one of the guns you listed seeing they carry a very good reputation as all being shooters
So without me sitting down & testing each one out, I'd go with the Icon My buddies dad has one & it's a tack driver! Not with his dad behind the gun but with my buddy shooting it ;D
For the price, the Savage can't be beat. I haven't priced any of those guns but generally the Savages are on the less-expensive side and they will hold their own for a hunting gun any day of the week. While I'm a T/C fan, at heart I question how long the company will stay in business. The Custom Shop is now closed down, FRO is done, which to me spells the beginning of the end.
As for glass, I've heard great things about Vortex. Leupy is American made and has always been great. Nikon is great quality for the price as well. The new Redfields have gotten good reviews as well (assembled in the US, Luepy now owns the name) but I have yet to see anyone on any of the forums I'm on with a review.
I have shot the icon the Tikka and the savage. All are great guns. Savage has a trigger that is hard to beat and many say they are perhaps the most accurate out of the box rifle available for the money. I have owned one in 308 and a tikka in .223. Both were absolute tackk drivers. I have a savage in .17 now and its a shooter as well.
Either caliber would be fine. 300 got more power and perhaps more long range accuracy but 06 has a mush more versatile array of loads available. 06 may be a bit more friendly to doing some target shooting.
Glass depends on price. Entry level (not cheap) I would go with a Nikon monarch or a leupold VX1 ($250 range). Mid price I would go with either the Monarch gold or the Leupold VX3 in a 50mm obj (5-6 hundered range) and high end I would either go with a Swarovski Z3 (1000-1300 range)
Interesting about TC. Would be a shame if they folded.
My hunting is mainly in Vermont and Colorado. Deer and elk are my game. I have a 30-06, but am leaning towards another. I just really like it! As far as the guns go, the Savage is actually one of the most expensive second to the Icon. I need to see and hold each one to get a feel for them. Right now I am leaning towards the Tikka T3.
As far as glass, I was considering the Zeiss Conquest or the VX2. Guess I'll wait to get the gun first!

Tikka T3 lite.. of the 2 caliber choices I would go .300 win mag. and as for glass get the best you can afford!! I get a kick out of guy's that spend $100's even over a grand for a rifle buy premium ammo and then throw a Tasco or a Simmons scope on it and complain the gun don't shoot worth crap!.. BTW I have one in 7mm-08 topped with a Nikon pro-staff 3x9 and lets just say it shoots really well!!..good luck with your choice...Bob..
When you get ready for glass, get with me. I've got a contact that may be able to get you a better price on a scope than other outlets. He was comparing prices the other night with Midway and was ~$100+ lower than Midway on the more expensive Nikon's and Luepys.
Anyone ever see the Sako A7? It's another I am considering. Looks very similar to the Tikka T3, but I like the looks of the stock better. Still need to see a few of them side by side. Going to Cabela's in Kansas City in October so hopesully they will have some of the models I am interested in.
As far as the scope, I am almost certain that I will get the Leupold VX3. Kind of thinking of the 4.5 x 14 instead of the 3.5 x 10. If you could only have one, would you get a higher power (4.5x14) or a larger objective (40mm as 50mm)?
Well tika is made by SAKO. They have or at least used to have some of the same parts with the sako being a more finley made weapon. I have a friend who has an older Sako 85 in 223. that gun is a real shooter. GREAT GREAT trigger on it. If money is not a problem I would go with the Sako.
As for the scope I would go with a bigger objective over more magnification. I have shot the M21 and m24 which are 9x and 10x at 1000m. Dont think you would be shooting anything that far!! the larger objective REALLY makes a difference in any low light situation.
You never said what you were looking for as far as weight? Are you going to be packing the rifle a long way? Do you hunt off of horse back in CO? If weight is not a big consideration and you are looking for a real tack driver there are a few other options out there. Also, what price range do you want to stay in for the whole package and do you definitely want a bolt or will a semi be ok?
Dan, those are good prices on the VX3! I will keep that in mind when I'm ready to purchase.
My brother-in-law has a Christiansen Arms rife in a 300 RUM. I know when he first got it he sent it back. Something about the barrel had burrs on it. The thought for the price that it should have come in perfect condition. Not sure what their quality control is, but I would agree with him on it should be perfect. They fixed it for him and sent it back to him. I think that I can get an accurate out of the box rifle for much less than the $3,500 he paid for it. I still belive that's true.
