I grew up squirrel hunting a lot & was always told & thought shooting into a squirrels nest was illegal If it is or was OK to do, would you do it?

If it was,I still probably wouldn't do it never know whats in there, specially if you can't see in it.Could be a hawk or something other then the squirrel using the nest.Thats just my thought.

Early one morning while on deer stand I watched as a hawk slammed into a squirrel's nest just as the squirrel was trying to bail over the side and hide underneath. That hawk sat in the nest and munched away while I watched. Don't think I would take a shot if I couldn't clearly identify the game.

No, no sense in doing so. First off a weave of leaves is no sort of backstop for a .22 bullet. Secondly, and as already mentioned, one would have no idea what, if anything, might be in that drey. Lastly, if there were a squirrel in the nest and it was killed, how would one get at it? It's not like it's going to fall out. Bad business shooting blindly - very bad business!

Well it seems we're all on the same page With my original question thread I did add on my opinions but head back until I heard a few replies. Saved it in Word and will add it below now. I couldn't do it myself for several reasons. For starters, I was told & taught not to! Not knowing what I was shooting at! Not knowing if I'd actually killed whatever is in the nest! Not being able to recover what I might have killed and last, it just seems unfair to the squirrel I call shooting into a nest just as bad as throwing dynamite in the water for fish or shooting a turkey off the roost.I saw that making sure of what's behind your target was in there & not on my list. Reason is & I know I've posted about it on here before, we never squirrel hunted with 22s. All we ever used was low brass 6 shot & a high brass if he was higher up or in a tree with a lot cover or branches. My Dad would have beaten our rear ends cherry red if he ever saw us shooting a 22 any angle over our shoulders. Does anyone know if it's an actually law? Or is it just common sense/part of hunting ethics? Here is where and why I post up the question. For a contest, you have to… Tell us what your earliest hunting memory is in this thread and you'll be entered. One of the replies was… I was about 7 or 8 and I asked my daddy to take me squirrel hunting. We did not kill any squirrels but I sure did get in some good target practice with my single shot .22 by shooting into squirrel nest.My only response after reading this was me shaking my head thinking how sad it is that idiots are passing on crap like this on to our future hunters I'm sure glad that people on this forum, in NH and in my area are on the same page as me Makes me feel good my boys will be hunting in a safer environment
