So I just got back from calling this evening. I covered a really large area (about 8 sq miles), calling with a mix of howls (separated by 15 sec breaks) and occasional pup yelping. I would run this for about 10 minutes and then move location. I never heard a single response. So my question - am I doing it all wrong, or are the coyotes all dead where I live?

I was out last night with Dan and Jeff. This is our first outting with Jeff. We started at 8:00 pm and went till 11:30 pm. Made 8 stands and only had 1 responce back. It was a nice group with sounds we have not heared before and a good group howl.
When you locate play 1 sound Dominant Male Group Rally Howl. Play the sound 10-20 seconds and stop the caller. Wait a min. then go again. If they are there. The responce will be that quick right back at you. No need to stay no more than 5 min.
Don't give up on a spot try it days in a row as they may make the circle back. Timing is everything. Right place right time they say.
We have a few hot spots that we know the coyotes are there. Have called and be a dead zone . Hit it days later and the night lights up.

Ok - this is good to know. Will hit the local spots again tonight and see what I can stir up. Thanks

This could be my problem - excuse my ignorance on this subject, I am not sure I know the difference between a dominant vs a non-dominant howl?
