Still a newbie at it. Really wishing I had a shop I could be working on some in right now; I'm missing my garage! Anyway, my first two. Gave the smaller one to my Dad, the other didn't turn out too well. Dad's is "carved" out of black locust, the paddle is oak. Quite high pitched and carry's well. The larger one was pieced with an oak base and ends, basswood (linden) and redwood, with a cedar paddle. It really was too big and the cedar didn't work well as a paddle, at least not without sealing it first. Live and learn...

The third call I made ended up in the hands of a younger girl, via a contest that I donated it to. This was another pieced call; oak base, ends and paddle, with poplar and maple sound boards.

The last two. Smaller one was "carved" out of redwood, with a poplar paddle. I swapped it for some boolits from a friend in Missouri. The larger call, well, lets just say it's one of those calls that you never forget. It was LARGE (those are 12 gauge shells for comparison), but that was the only downside. I brought it with me to winter archery league one night and that's where it got it's name. I don't really want to type the name where there is a possibility of young eyes reading it, but lets just say it's a 4-letter word and when she spoke, visions of well-experienced hens ran through the minds of any nearby toms. Anyway, back to the details.... This one is a bit different from the rest- it's a pieced call with an oak base and ends, one soundboard is poplar, the other was from an unknown species from salvaged leftover wood flooring. Paddle is black walnut. The difference is this one is dual-chambered, which is why it turned out so big. Boy, did she talk though. I sold this call, amid fears of my father disowning me, to help fund an AR. I was happy to hear that the guy I sold it to used it solely to take a turkey (his first!) last spring. Pics of my last two: That's all I've completed. I've got the beginnings of a couple more boxed up here, but like I said I have no place to work on them. Hopefully that will change sometime soon though!

Awesome!
Is there one wood you prefer over another for sound?

I haven't made enough to have a preference yet. I will say that in my limited experience I've found cedar to be tricky to get good, consistent sound out of. If it's being used for a paddle it needs to be sealed first. So far, I've just used woods that I had on hand or could obtain with a quick trip to a lumber yard. I haven't tried anything exotic yet. I've got some stuff slabbed out from firewood chunks that will hopefully someday turn into either calls or T/C grips/forends.

Nice work danf It takes patients and talent to made box calls that can sing. This year I'm in the market for a long box. I have a few of Larry Gresser one sided box calls that I carry. Good stuff

Looking real good, danf
Good job & hope you get enough room to work on more - they sure look sweet and it's a shame you can't do more right now
