Omega,
I am sure that they have found dogs with 30/06 rounds in it. Finding rounds in an animal says nothing about the effectiveness of that round. How far was the animal when it was shot at? What was the shot angle like? What was the disposition of the animal? That information is needed before one can make judgment on any round.
I have found 12ga shotgun slugs in deer that I have shot. Does that mean that the 12ga slug is ineffective round? Certainly not. Same goes with archery equipment. We have all seen the pictures of or heard stories of deer running around with arrows suck in them. That does not mean that archery equipment is not an effective tool to kill deer with. In my opinion, the same goes with the 17hmr and coyote debate.
As far as the professional hunters, well after watching some borrowed videos and reading a lot on PM and a few other boards, it seems to me that the "PROS" want a round that kills DRT. They dont want to have to track any dogs at all. Anything less than a DRT shot is unacceptable to them. The 17 is capable of that but it would limit their shots because from what I have seen and read these guys will shoot at any dog at any angle. I personally would not and will not shot at an any animal unless I have a clear shot at what I consider the vitals. That does not mean they are wrong for their shot choices or that I am wrong for limiting mine just as someone who shoots a .17 and is capable with it is not wrong for using it on coyotes.
One thing that I hear most people say who are against the 17 for coyotes is that and I quote, "I know that people have killed coyotes with it but you should not use it". If people have killed coyotes with it then I think that proves the problem with runners is not in the round but in the shooter.
p.s. Spent 4 hours yesterday in an area that had TONS of sign before the last storm and saw no sign nor were we able to call any in.
