My son shot a snowshoe while deer hunting Saturday. A bit later he noticed a bunch of VERY SMALL ticks on his hand and pants, he removed them, but they are so small who knows if he got them all.
He showed me some, they are barely visible, not even 100% sure they are ticks they are so small. I tried to crush one with my finger, it had no effect on it, so I do think they are ticks.
Has anyone seen/heard of this?
Are they deer ticks?
Is Lyme a concern now?
How should one handle a snowshoe to prevent this?

Do you have snow yet were you are hunting? If so it is probably snow lice. or snow fleas. Don't laugh its true.

Yes there was a bit of snow, like an inch. I don't think they were lice or fleas, they didn't jump at all, just crawled, same shape as a tick, hard to really tell they where so small. No rash or any other symptoms yet, so fingers crossed!

Those are ticks. Major problem with them lately. A friend of mine recently killed a coyote and it had over 3000 ticks on it of all shapes and sizes. Last year, another friend killed a moose and it had over 10,000 ticks on it which was an estimate based on how many they counted in a small area and multiplied. We put Advantix on our cats every 3 weeks at $100 a shot and they still have ticks all over them. Needless to say, ticks are a huge issue lately.

Not me - the taxidermist came up with that number based on how many he pulled off using clear packing tape. Same thing a different taxidermist used with my friend's moose. I guess its a fairly common practice to tape off the ticks and count them.
