As some might have read or heard from talking with me, I'm looking to buy a new hunting rifle. One that's good for hunting NH, VT and ME (if I ever do it) soft woods, cut overs, hemlocks, slash and bog bottoms while sitting, still hunting or stalking deer. I'm thinking pretty hard about the Remington 750 Woodmaster 308 Win in the carbine. Now I know it a personal preference but could someone care to give some of their opinions of what to go with, wood or synthetic? They both weight the same (so they say) but I'm just undecided about it. I like the idea of not worrying about the woods finish while hunting where I do. Going through thick whippets or hemlocks, I could use the gun to bust my way through it

Wood is nice but I like the composite stocks.

If they weigh the same than I would go with wood. I think it is much quieter than synthetic when you are pounding through the brush. Dont worry abut what the gun looks like its a hunting rifle

I prefer synthetic because it isn't affected by weather. Wood will swell and get much heavier as it absorbs moisture.

I bought synthetic, I read alot, asked alot of questions, including on here, and for me it came down to this: I really didn't care, couldn't tell much of a real difference. But the cost was $200+ lower for the same gun with synthetic stock.
The major differences I could figure out: - wood, more prone to severe weather changing the shape of the wood. Might put pressure on the barrel and effect accuracy. However in my hands, probably not noticable between that severe of weather Iwon't be out (wimp) and when it comes to being a "good" shot, well respectively, I am way better with my bow. Just don't put the practice time in with the gun
- Cleaning. gun shop said some of the spray bore cleaners effect the synthetic stocks.
- cost, same gun, synthetic was cheaper.
So, ya, it comes down to personal preference.

Member Hrly69 has one of these wood 750's in .308. He is a little disapointed with the accuracy however accurate enough for deer hunting out to 150 yards. There are more accurate rifles to be had for less money. Semi-auto's are not for me. I like all manual actions. Users have also reported sporatic jamming problems with the .308 cal. The rifle is somewhat finicky on what ammo type it likes.

I'm reading and hearing more and more about them jamming, especially in the colder temps. That's not something I care to deal with hunting in the NE.
I was looking at the Benelli R1 today plus reading a lot of the reviews. I liked the feel of the gun once I got over the unusual design which after reading further, makes sense. I was looking at the 30-06 in the ComforTech™ black synthetic stock with a 22” barrel. It came right to my shoulder sweet and the feel of the gun was something I could see using in the field.

The jamming goes away once you find the right load for it. These are proven reliable rifles that have been around 50 years or so in one form or another.
If you can afford the Benelli, that's a really nice gun too.
As far as stocks, if its going to be dragged around the woods a lot, go synthetic. Most synthetic stocked rifles today already come pillar bedded and are more accurate out of the box than wood stocks. I still like wood because it looks nice, but I cringe every time I take one into the woods.

I know that not all of the Remington autos jam and cleaning does help from keeping it happening. I think I'm just looking for any reason to buy another Benelli Right now I'm going through a "more" issue. The more I see it, the more I read up on it.......the more I want it I'm looking to get this one in the 30-06 with a 20" barrel. Not sure about the sights yet. I'd like to do a peep sight but I need to take a look at the sights Benelli offers first. I’m also not looking to have the extra high comb pad. Again, I’d like to see it with the standard pad or maybe the raised comb pad. I just email Benelli to see if the gun I'm looking to buy is available. Looking at the web site, the APG is available in the 30-06 but it said nothing on the barrel length.

Tim,
The Berniers of Maine, good friends with the Benoits, used to use peeps on their remingtons. The Father now uses a BAR with an red dot. I have never used on for hunting but it is supposed to be great for quick acquisition on running targets.
I would love the Benelli, just got to get a few other toys first!

Tim? I never really used a peep before moving up here and after going to a Benoits seminar, I put one on my 30-30. I love it for getting up on target fast. I thought about using a see through mounts but I've never been a big fan of them seeing they mount so high off the gun. I'll probably put a scope on it when I first get it for finding the right load and seeing how it drives tacks. I might be able to use a removeable scope base and the peep sight. Stand hunting in open woods keep the scope on. Putting on a push or hunting the hemlocks, remove the scope and use the peep

So I got the 22" barrel in all black. Still a sweet looking gun
