I just picked up one today Ruger M77 MarkII in the 223 Debated with over a Browning A Bolt synthtic stock / bull barrel in the 204. It was nice but I just didn't think the 204 would cut it

Ballisticaly the .204 and 22/250 are the same. The .204 was created to perform like the 22/250 but burn way less powder. The only complaint that I have read about the .204 is some of the early plastic tip bullets in 32 grain would splash when hitting a shoulder bone or similar. Most found that the heaver 39 and 40 grain bullets do not do that and leave very little fur damage if any. .204 is wicked on p-dogs. I admit, bullet choices for the .204 are not as wide as 22/250 and .223 but if you roll your own then your options are greater. .204 is a much more accurate, flat and faster bullet than the .223, the .204 can do everything a .223 can do. Maybe better in some applications. Unless you wanna load up heavy bullets and shoot Deer with your .223, but I wouldn't suggest anything smaller than a .243 on Deer. And yes, I have guns chambered in both calibers. And if I could afford it, I would get a .204 on the AR platform.

I really really like the feel of the Browning rifle but have read several complains about the 204 for coyote hunting. This one is basically for coyote & ground hogs. Now I know I alway preach...it's all about shot placement but I'd feel a little more comfortable with the 223. Like you Mike, if I had the money and the wife wasn't there with me, I would have bought them both On the subject of deer hunting, I read in the reg book that you can hunt deer with anything but rim-fire guns which I find shocking I personally wouldn't use anything less than 243 for deer as well but think it's interesting they allow it. I think I'd let Jacob down the road shoot deer with it but! but only after I've rolled my own heavier load for it than what the factory loads have out. I'd also want to try the round out myself before letting him shot one

Complaints about the .204? Of course there will be some as with any round. I have heard guys talk of the .223 and say it is the best round ever, I disagree!!
You couldn't be more right about shot placement! I just like a round that no matter the target distance, put the cross hairs on it and pull the trigger like the .204. 30-300 no guess work.
the same does not hold for the .223.
But any caliber, shot it and know it. Good luck with your new rifle!

I would rather buy a 220 swift for something under the 243 but their hard to find. 220 swift still rules after all these years and introduction of new calibers in the fps, range and trajectory factors. Only down side is that it the round burns hot I feel the 223 will work out just great for what I want to use it for. I feel the average shot here in NH on coyote would be 150 and under and as for ground hogs in PA it's close to the same. Could find and take longer shots but perfectly content with under 150 yards

Gotta luv it - Love these discussions. Haven't shot a .204, so I can't say one way or another, but I have a .223 and I've had some VERY accurate .243s. I know a .243 will take down a yote with 1 round, especially with the VG bullets I use, and leave very little fur damage. I know a .223 will do the same. Have yet to see a .204 take down anything

I just said that to get a rise out of B204 ....never shot a .204 and just sighted my new .223 in....4 shots..BULLSEYE.....I like it so far it fills the niche between my .270 and .17HMR.

I might consider getting a .204 now that Barnes makes a Varmint Grenade bullet for it.
What do you have for a .223? I've got the Savage Model 10 Predator. Nice rifle but doesn't have the accuracy I've come to expect from a modern rifle. 2" groups at 100 yards is not good enough. Especially when I'm shooting Sierra bench rest ammo.
