As of today 9/14/07, I started turning in my shop ;D I started on a grunt tube but won't be able to get back in the shop for a few days. Time in the woods is way over due after the week I just had ;D
Once I get back in there, I'll be sure to post a few photos of the shop and the call I'm working on.

Well I just got off the phone with Andy of Kaiser Kalls. He gave me some great advice for turning pot calls. Hopefully once I get some turning time in, I'll be able to start making the copper calls like he's made for me.
For those that haven't had the chance to hear this call, it's absolutely AWESOME!! I can say without any hesitation that is the best sounding pot friction call I've ever heard.
I'm going to take all of his advice, ticks of the trade and try to incorporate them into the calls I turn. I figured if I want to make great calls and he's kind enough to help, why not learn from one of the best.
Anyway, it was great talking with him and I had to share it with you guys.

Turned my first striker last night and it turned out pretty nice ;D It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be for being my first go at it. I still need to set up the band saw so that I can cut off the ends and see how she sounds on a call. The band saw will be set up tonight that's for sure ;D I went over to GooseBay Inc. Saw & Lumber in Chichester (off of Rt.4) yesterday and picked up some Purple-heart, Birds Eye Maple, Blood-wood and Hickory stock. Only the Birds Eye Maple will be for pot calls and the rest for strikers. The deer grunt tube I was turning came out OK but I messed it up a little. Learned you shouldn't take it off the lathe while you're turning For only turning three times now I've already learned a lot of things I shouldn't do and things I should do. I'll start getting some photos up here so you can see what I'm turning. This wood turning stuff is addicting ;D

I sure do! I think tube calls is an excellent weapon to have in your vest. Only problem with making them is that I better be able to play one and I don't Bought one last year but the didn't use it because of my mouth calls. I'll be picking it this winter Well here’s the striker I turned. It’s not finished and my photo tent need some practice. I'll finish it soon and see how she plays.

I'll be making glass, slate and copper calls and I'm looking to make them 3" & 3-1/4" instead of 3-1/2". It all depends on the sound I get from the smaller diameter pots. If it's not up to my liking, than I won't be making them. I want to make a call that not only sounds awesome! but will fit comfortably in your hand or in the hands of a youth hunter A 32nd on an inch on a calls pedestal can make a big difference in how a call sounds. Finding the right combinations for the smaller calls is going to be a challenge. Well, my band saw is all put together ;D Tonight I'll take it down to the shop, make my final adjustment and get her plugged in.
