i find most of mine during spring turkey hunting. so i would say anytime after the snow has mostly melted and before new green comes in is a great time to find them.

I also was wondering when to start looking for them. Are they normally on trails or off? Is there any types of areas that are more likely to have sheds? troutpro Late February into early March is a good time to start looking of course that is if you do not have a lot of competition in your area for them.As for what type of areas I always start at a food source and hike that first and then work my way back into the bedding area.Good Luck to everybody this shed season. deershed great finds and photos!

Thanks for the help shed94! I don't think I have any competition, private property for the most part. This year I plan on looking hard for them, so hopefully I will find a few.

Yea, we own a large dairy farm (for our area, small compared to other areas), most of my shed hunting will be done on ours and other farmers property. I don't think they shed hunt at all, they may go for a hike or be doing field and fence work and see them, but I doubt it. I haven't seen many bucks though, once on a hike and twice in stand, so I don't know what to expect. I was told there is a ten pointer on some land we rent that was taken, have to try and find his sheds.

What's you count so far for this season? And what's an average of sheds on a good season?

Wow 53, that is a ton of sheds. I would be happy to get five. I now have a good camera so when I start looking for sheds I'll be sure to take it with me.

I started my shed season last week for 1 hunt,my areas get a ton of competetion.I found 2 fresh sheds and saw a few half racks that shed one side.Like Shed94 already said, late Feb. early March is a good starting time. You'll hear of fresh antlers being found in Dec. and people still seeing antlered buck running in late April. Most I think drop the first couple weeks in March. When I start early before most have dropped like now.I'm careful what areas I check. If you pressure the buck before they drop they might move out of your arera and drop where you can't look.Alot of my shedding areas I can afford to bump the deer and still be able to keep track of them. Some of my spots I put extra pressure on the areas b/c of the other competetion hoping to spread the deer out alittle. Early season shedding I also try to hit spots I've found early sheds in previous years.I haven't dug out last years sheds yet,but I believe the one shed I found the other day is off the same buck I found his set from last year and his one antler was my first for the season last year. Here's a couple pics of the other day's finds.
