I decided to hunt a scrap line with my climber. I had not hunted this piece of woods yet so I figured I would give it a try. I got set up early and waited. About 4:00 I heard deer moving of to my left but it was to think to see anything. Soon after 4 deer crossed in front of me about 70 yards out in front but I had no shot. I knew the deer were headed to a green field that I hunt about 100 yards away so I decided to get down and try and put the sneak on them when they got to the field.
I got down as quietly as I could and packed up my climber and headed for the truck. I got there right at 4:30, dropped my stand off and headed for the backside of the field. One of the land owners were I hunt was coming out of his house with his gun and asked if I had seen anything. I told him what I had seen and what I was going to do. He suggested I sit on the log pile between the two fields as he was going to take a walk out back. If he jumped anything it would cross near me and if the deer I saw did go into the green field I would hear them and could sneak around the log pile and try to get a shot.
I got set up at 4:40 and watched the wood line were the landowner was and waited. About 5 minuets later I heard deer going into the field behind me. I checked my watch (my phone actually) and decided to wait to 5:00 to move. That would leave me 5 minuets to go about 15 yards to get a shot into the green field.
I glanced down at the phone and it said 4:53. I looked back up and a deer was standing on the corner of the woods and field about 275 yards away. When I put scope on it I could see it was the 5 pointer I had several trail cam pics of. He looked back over his shoulder and took of running at an angle toward my right.
I kept the cross hairs on the front of his far shoulder. When he was about 75 yards away I squeezed the trigger. I saw the deer jump straight up in the air and head into the green field. I head him go into the alders and then nothing. I waited a few seconds and went to look for blood where I shot him but I could not find any.
The farmer came down the road while I was in the filed looking and yelled to me that he had seen the whole thing!! He had seen the deer come out of the woods and was watching it when I shot. He said he saw the smoke and then heard the shot. He watched the deer cross the rd but did not see were it went.
We found blood right where it crossed the rd into the green field. I went back to the truck to get my light and the farmer said he would go get his and help me look. By the time I got back the other landowner was there and we all started looking.
We lost blood after about 30 yards. We walked the same line the deer was going for 100 yards looking for blood and looking into the alder swamp for the deer to no avail. I said I wanted to walk the other side to see if I could see were he came out. When we walked back by the last blood the farmer said, and I quote, “ he defiantly went this way I can smell him”. Me and the other landowner looked at each other and chuckled.
I walked the very edge of the swamp looking for blood or muddy water. I was just past the spot were we found last blood. I shined the light across the swamp and saw the belly!!! The deer was only 10 feet from last blood and we had to have been practically standing on it when looking. I guess the farmer was right, he could smell it!!!
I dressed him on the other side of the farm to minimize coyotes. When I examined the gut pile I had made a perfect shot. Through the right shoulder, centered the heart and the fragments took out the front part of the left lung. The bullet did not pass through. The butcher saved it for me. He said both shoulders were hammered!!
Well that’s three. I am going to hunt the evening this week and maybe Wed morning. Thursday I will start packing and Saturday I fly out for Kansas for 10 days (maybe more!!!)
Good luck

Hey congratulations! that's awesome and a good story! How much did he weigh? When you get the bullet back you should take a pic, the performance always amazes me, I have the bullet from the moose i dropped in it's tracks a couple years ago, it's a trophy in itself. What kind of bullets were you using? Congrats again and good luck in Kansas, I hope you have a very safe and successful trip! -Chris

Sorry I thought I poste it. It weighed 147#'s dressed no heart or liver. The bullet was a 245gr aerotip powerbelt. Bullet was about 90% intact (i did not weight it just a visual) which is amazing in its self.
