I just took two friends to the indoor range at my gun club. To give these guys a selection I took 9mm, .45 ACP, 10mm, and .44 mag. We had full sized silhouettes and fired from 75', 50', and lastly 33'. This range is a little messed up that to change distance, you don't move your targets closer or further away. Instead the whole firing station moves closer to the targets that are at the backstop. My club needs to get with the damn program and upgrade. At the end of our little shooting session we started rapid firing. We weren't going crazy and just blasting away. We were firing fairly quick, but careful to keep each round at least on paper.
Just as we finished up and started sweeping up brass, another member comes into the range, the range governor. Up until this point we were the only people there. He immediately started in on all the shit we were doing wrong. I'll admit that there were things posted there, but not clearly, AND I don't think some of the shit he complained about was reasonable.
I know you're not supposed to use rifle ammo other than .22 LR. To the best of my recollection all pistol ammo was good to go. Apparently 10mm and .44 mag is a no-no. He pointed out an 8"X10" paper listing prohibited calibers. I did list these calibers in the log book when we signed in. If I was intentionally violating the rules I wouldn't have listed .44 mag and 10mm in the book.
Then he said the 33' foot position was only for air guns. WTFO!!!. 33' is a much more practical distance to practice with a handgun than the 75'. Again there was a sign, but it was a small 5"x5" stating air guns only at the 33' line.
Then after we were done sweeping up all the brass, he said the WHOLE range had to be entirely swept after each shooting session. The reason is due to lead dust. Then he bitched about the silhouettes. I said the rules state no targets with a likeness of anyone. I guess in the past some guys have used photos of people they didn't like, such as liberals, ex-wives, or whoever, but now you can't even shoot a photo of Osama. The rules DO allow for silhouettes, but he says that encourages rapid fire which I guess is also not allowed.
I know the rules are the rules, but what the hell? It seems everything is restricted at this place. It's not like I have a hell of a lot of ranges to choose from around here. I admit that I should have known the rules better, but does this seem to be a little much to you? The damn old times at these clubs love to be a bunch of nit-picky mother. It's like the old bastards that hang out at lodges like the lions club or the elks. They have nothing else in their life.
I will admit that I did violate a lot of rules I wasn’t aware of, but should have been. I just think there are too many rules. They seem to be making every effort to remove the fun from shooting.
