I was lucky enough to find some fresh uncalled birds this week. Monday I called in 7 and shot 9 shells to bring down this one. The wind made it tough so I called it for the day after an hour. Today I toughed it out for 2 hours in the wind and actually shot 100% on these. I think the days of double digit hunts are gone for the season...

Nice How long is VT in maxus? I'll be scouting turkey on Sunday so maybe I should take the 12ga and bag of toys?

VT goes until April 30. So yes bring stuff to shoot crows!!! I took my daughter out today. I asked yesterday if she wanted to go hunt crows with me, she said yes, much to my surprise. So we loaded up on snack food and hot chocolate and headed out to the honey hole this afternoon. I was shocked at how much fun she had. I let her run the remote for the foxpro and she thought that was great. The first crow that came in I toasted and she couldn't get enough. I guess I need to order her some camo... I asked her to get a pic of me shooting at a crow... I was hoping for a shot of me in the foreground pointing at a crow coming in but my kid is 7 so this is the pic I got... LOL

After having the last 3 days off of work and not going out due to rain and family stuff I started getting an itchy trigger finger. I didn't have the energy or want to spend the gas money to head up to the champlain valley so I trucked across the river to see if I could do a little R&G. First setup I called, no birds. I figured it was a little to close to a spot I hammered on the NH side a couple of weeks ago. Setup number 2- I saw a crow fly across the road and 50 yards up is snowmachine trail so parking was no problem. 20 yards down the trail is a lowland with short brush. I thought, "Perfect! Put the call in the brush and hide under a pine, hopefully they will swing down low and come in range." I fired up the call and not 5 seconds later I see one coming in hot. I had to let him make a few passes before I could get a clear shot through the big pine. After the shot three more came in. I tagged 2 of them and felt pretty sure I hit the third but he flew off, losing altitude the whole way. Setup #3- brought in zero birds. Setup #4- I had 4 come in but they hung up way too high. Spot #5- Knocked down one that I really thought was too high but he was the lowest bird to come in outta the 3 I had respond to the call. I watched him tumble down through a tree whacking branches the whole way down. I thought I had marked him pretty well but after looking for the carcass for 20 minutes I couldn't find it. I normally don't expect to hit the birds I don't think are in range but I had 2 today that I reached out on. I really like these 1 1/4oz #6 RIO shells. Plus they are blue and that is fun.

I am thinking of getting a Maine License this summer because their season starts August 1. This crow thing is getting a little out of hand for me. It's like crack though, I just can't stop. Maybe I should pack up the kid and head out today. 5 years old isn't too young to go hunting is it?

AWESOME You know maxus, you've got to give me a chance with this crow thumping thing I've got only one full day to dedicate to crows in VT so I hope I can impress ya with some numbers. So what are these Rio shells and are they expensive? I asked my son last night if he want to go the free book fair or crow hunting in VT with me. He called is mother over and asked if he went crow hunting, would she still pick up some books for him. She said yes and he stood on the hallway rail with his hand under his chin thinking. Three seconds into thinking about it, with only moving his hand under his chin he pointed down to me and said....crow hunting! My man

That totally rocks that your son chose crow hunting!!! I wish you many "Low and Slow" opportunities on your VT hunt. As far as the Rio shells go... $9.99 a box at the Charlestown gun shop. So they are more expensive than the Wal-Mart 100 packs but cheaper than the high brass Remington loads, at $12. Plus did I mention they are blue?

Maxus…I just took a trip down to Merrimack to buy 3 boxes of Rio loads. I use the Remington Express 2-3/4” 1-1/4 with 6 shot and 3-3/4 dram which I’m guess is the powder. The Rio shells are the same shell but with 3-1/4 drag and less velocity than the Express loads. If they work well, I’ll be looking to buy them by the case for the fall season first hunt. Yes that’s me poking myself and my shooting ability I really like the fact they are $7 cheaper than the Remington loads at $15.99 a box. Plus they are blue Anyone know someone who reloads? I wonder if the cost of shooting crows (other than improving my shooting and better shot selection) would be worth shooting reloads? It might be nice throwing a 6X7 or 6X8 shot at them.

I'm game! The more people out there missing means more jokes I can crack ;D But you can't be thin skinned or get offended easy.
I'm by far any kind of a crack shot myself. I only share Tom Knapps first name and that's as far as it goes ;D I'll even bust on myself in heartbeat so if you can have fun, you can come along anytime with me.
