Happy New Year Was wondering if anyone has been hearing much in the way of coyote packs howling? We have been calling and it's been really quiet. Perhaps warms temps and easy access to food is keeping them fat and lazy, but it seems awfully quiet. Having a tough time getting anything to respond to distress calls too. Like a ghost town out there..

I haven't been out since Dec 15th One thing I noticed this year was lack of seeing and hearing the coyotes. I did hear several on earley hunts but I don't recall much action mid to late season

Graham, Have you been over the farm? I did not see or hear any during deer season. Did hear a bunch over in Durham but have not made it over there yet.

Hi Jeff,
Have not tried the farm - every time we go the winds have been wrong. We got busted by a coyote in the field at another spot in Durham one morning before Christmas, but nothing since then. Been hitting a few spots in that general area, but no luck. trying not to educate them too much either.
Started working some spots at night already and not getting any responses at all. Eerily quiet. even areas where I am seeing good fresh sign - no response. Strange...

Saw two running down the road the other night. Split them with my car, one on each side. Been hearing some lone howling down my the dump in town around midnight when I let my dog out for the last time at night.

They are around!
Last night ran over to a friend's house who was hearing them out back. We heard them about 200 yards away, howling and performing, but also heard a couple walking around about 30 yards away. we decided to sneak into the open oaks and setup then back into a blind. I hit the caller with rabbit distress and in less than 6 seconds 2 dogs came sprinting to the decoy - downwind! Could not believe how fast they came in.
My buddy got one shotgun shot off, but it was a miss. The rest of the pack was still howling, so I tried a ki-yi call, but that just shut them up and all went quiet for the next 20 minutes. So we backed out for another night.
Glad to know there are still some around - exciting time none the less.

That wasn't Dan shooting was it?
Glad to see you out and about. You using the new 250 light?
I was out Saturday night but no luck. I did locate a pack and made a few stands. This week will be cold nights and that should get them going. I'm changing my time to hunt at night till after 2 AM to see what happens. I have been setting baits and have set a tree stand with a cut shooting lane to 130 yds. This new home has been looking good so far.
Plus, I have a night shooting range set up in the pit and a life size coyote target set up with night eyes that light up when I hit it with the light. Been good to test gear. And shooting the target tells a lot on what you and your stuff is doing.

LOL - No that wasn't Dan :-)
I did use the new Kill Light - it is great. Very bright and fits nicely on the gun. Happy with it.
Sounds like your setup is pretty good. Glad you're enjoying the new home. Let us know how the early AM hunting works out.

Hey now Steve! Hope you get something up there.
Still eerily quiet. Either they are all educated or just haven't been interested in what we're bringing to the table...
