Stopped by a farm I hunt tonight on the way back from my patents. Not intending to do anything but look at deer but since the .223 was with me I took it.
Went to the sand pit in the back of the property and set up on a tall wall overlooking the old pit and a bean field. As soon as I sat down I see a blond coyote on the far left corner of the field. I glassed him to make sure it was not a dog or that someone was with it and when I was sure I hit it with the range finder, 305 and he was trotting away at an angle. I lined him up and barked to try an stop him but with no luck. I guessed him at 350, held high on the shoulder and touched it off.
First the coyote rolls over like he was hit with a sledge hammer. But he jumps right up and starts bightting at his mid section just like you see on the shows. Then he takes off the way he came.
I head over that way completely unprepared. I am in my shorts, sandals on, no thermall cell only bug spray on and no light. As i come off the hill still 300 yards away a doe comes out right were the coyote came out and went in. I figure that it must be dead right were I last saw it. The doe let me walk by her at 30 yards before she snuck off. I get to the spot where I shot the coyote and there is blood, fur and an AWFUL stench. I must have hit further back and paunched it.
There was good blood and I followed it to were it went in the woods and I could not see it anymore. There was quit a bit of blood and I am sure it is dead. I am going to go back tomorrow and look for it. I took a picture of the last blood and looking to were I shot from and will post when I get it off my phone. Hopefully I will have a pic of the coyote tomorrow as well.
