Hit the woods early as the Wife went with the girls to the Mall. Had the day so, I packed the gear and went looking for coyotes. Still learning this new area but gaining ground. I have 2 bait sites going and both are getting hit often. One is just fox though. I bury the bait deep in the snow and then take a stick and make a hole down through the snow and then add a trapping lure. It's cool as they make little tunnels to the bait. (need a couple of trail cameras). Coyotes on the other one. They just dig a big hole right to the bucket. Anyway, the deer skull I found was cool. When I look for coyotes in the woods I look for funnels and high ground for a stand. I saw this knoll off of a stream bed and it work well with the stream as a funnel and tall timber around. As I made my way to the knoll I saw the horn sticking out off the snow, right on top of the knoll. You know that felling when you fined a shed. WOW. So I grab the horn and the skull comes with it plus the whole spinal cord and that opens up snow to other bones.
As I sat there looking around I was thinking was this his last stand to fend off coyotes. Do you think he headed for the high ground hoping to gain some kind of advantage. It was nice just to set there, over a mile and a half deep in the woods and fined this spot. Thinking over what had happened to this buck. There were a couple good trails and the knoll will make a good calling stand.
I did fined they were using the stream as a run way and then trail off that to fields and house lots. Yes, one track I was on came right out to the back off a house.
I made 2 stands with the WT no luck. The wind was crazy and ice was falling all around me.
All in all a great day. Boy, did I sleep good Saturday night.
