Thinking about finding a barrel for my Mossberg 500 and having it cut down and threaded for a choke so I can use a shorter barrel for turkeys. I've been using a 28" VR barrel for years and have never liked how long it makes the whole gun. I'm thinking a barrel in the 20-22" range would be nice...
So, anyone know of any smiths around that can do this type of work for a reasonable price?

Not sure if any local gunsmiths could do it or not. What you have to be careful of is when you cut back the barrel the metal becomes thinner and there is no longer enough room to use regular threaded chokes and maintain barrel integrity. That does not mean it can not be done. One your gun may have enough thickness to do. If not there are companies that do offer thin wall chokes. Problem is that it is expensive and you could just go buy a new barrel. If your interested this Briley is the company to talk to. give them a call they will answer any questions you may have. www.briley.com/2009/screwchokepricing.html

Thanks guys. Briley's is proud of their work, which I'm fine with, but for a Mossberg I don't think it's worth it. I've got a couple of other leads to pursue at this point. I may just buy a 24" vent rib barrel that's already threaded and be done with it, but there are a few 24" smoothbore slug barrels floating around that would probably be workable. But then I get into the issue of sights.... I'll figure something out.

Dan, thats a good idea. Never thought of that. I would guess there is plenty of meat in a slug barrel to thread it.
Good luck

I have an older model 500 12 guage slug barrel, I am 95% sure it doesn't have sights on it, just a bead, I never use it and don't see myself using it, in fact I am not 100% sure where it is! It's yours if you want it.

However we can arrange something is fine with me. I'd be more than happy to pay for shipping if need be.
