Has anyone ever made their own game camera? I know you can buy most of the parts from www.pixcontroller.com . It's hard to find a good reliable digital game camera these days that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I have been toying with the idea of trying to build one, but I'm not that electricaly inclined Anyone else tried?

Rob if you want to dive in let lme know. I have built 9 units in the last year (not all for me) and I am going to build 4-5 more this winter.
I can tell you that they are WAY WAY better than anything you can buy and they are at least a 3rd the cost.

I use what is called the pipe through method. It looks like this You then take a python cable lock, tund it through the pipe and around the tree. The cable works reall good. Cant cut it with a bold cutter and proberly cant cut it with an ax. But it they want it the will get it no matter what!!

If you want to make one let me know. The two places to get kits are www.whitetailsupply.com/or www.pixcontroller.com/Pix has some great instructions but I am dealing with whitetail now. They have much better shipping times and they have increased their inventory. Eihter one has kits you can buy that include everything except the camera. The camers you buy on ebay or you can try pawn shops. The kits are around 80 and the camers anywere from 50-150 dollars depending on what you get. The most common it seems are the sony p32, p41, s40 and the s600. The only other things you need are a fine point solder gun, electric tape, wire cutters/stripers, a counter sink bit and a 1" or 7/8" forster style bit. If you or any one wants to build one go to realdealhuntingchat.invisionzone.com/ and start looking around and asking questions. IT is one of the best websites I have ever been on because EVERYONE is very helpfull and willing to help anyone. good luck and be carfull. This is VERY ADDICTING!!

Thanks for the info Regnar. I would really like to build one as I am not happy with what is being sold. All I really want is a reliable camera. I bought a Moultrie from Cabelas, but the batter life sucks. I am going to return it.
As I said, I am not very electrically inclined but willing to give it a shot. I will read through the websites you mentioned. I'm sure I will have a ton of questions! Hopefully after the first one it will get easier.

Rob,
Two things,
I have a hard time plugging an electrict cord into the wall and yes they get alot easier after the first one. The biggest obstical is trying to figure out how to lay everything out.
Good luck and let me know if you need help

In looking at the Whitetail site, there seems to be several kits to choose from. Which do you recommend? Also, which Sony camera do you recommend to build a kit with?

Well, I bought a Sony P32 camera on Ebay. I then ordered a kit from Whitetail Supply. Can't wait for them to arrive so I can get started.
Merry Christmas to all . . . Rob

I finally finished my HomeBrew camera. It took a little reading to figure out how to build it, but all in all it wasn't too bad. Here is a picture of it. I can't believe how small they are these days 4.5" x 6"! The first night out I had 30 pics. Here is a sample of one. It uses a Sony 3.2MP digital camera. . . . Rob

Nice looking setup, and a pretty good picture. Which camera is that? Was it tough or expensive to build everything? Nevermind about the questions, I read the rest of the post.

Rob,
Good looking build. Very neat and clean. Just wondering how you are securing it? Did you manage to get a pipe thru in it or are you going to use eye bolts?
