Fisher are easy to call, they are just weasels!
Nice take!! I would like to run a trap line but don't have the time!

I have 9 beaver on the board so far. My fisher sets are not out yet but will be this weekend. I usally wait till the huning season is over so they don't get messed with. My nephew got a large male the other night. I'm going to set a few yote sets as well. I'll post pictures if I have any luck.

Ken, almost all my sets are 330 coni. 220's are to light. If he is getting debri in his traps like you said he may be trapping slides. They use the slides for gathering winter food. I would have him look for cross overs, or travel lanes. Then use some bait on a scent mound and he will clean house. I would be glad to help him if he would like. The drowning sets work well to but are tough this time of year.

When I was a lad my best buddies dad was a well known trapper and we used to sit in the barn n watch him skin beaver....they always seemed huge to me and he use to put em on round hoops if I recall correctly...he used to drink old milwaukee and smoke a pipe ...I always wish I would have paid more attention and learned from him as a kid...he was a legendary fox trapper and ginseng hunter too.

Do the traps need to be underwater? I only ask because I nearly lost a bird dog to a coni trap. Lucky for me his head and forefoot went in together and I was able to get to him pretty quick. I asked the DNR in Iowa where I was hunting and they told me that the traps are required to be at least 4 inches below water line.

The 330's which are primarily used for beaver have to be in the water. This time of year you want to fully submerge them because ice will prevent them from doing there job. Anything 220 and larger have to be set at least 5 feet off the ground. I'm using 160's now on pole sets and in cubbies for fisher. A free roaming dog could certainly get into a cubby set. There is a lot of scent around this type of set and there is raw meat in the cubby. I doubt that your dog got into a 330. I dont think he would walk away from that. Sounds to me like he got into a cubby set for fisher. Was there a box or pail around?

He got into one while pheasant hunting on public walk in hunting land in Iowa. At first I was pissed but then I realized the trapper could never have known that my dog would be hunting birds there. It was just an accident and I was glad that I could be there to get him out. The crazy thing is...he went right back to hunting and two years later on some different public hunting grounds he got his paw caught in a leg hold trap. Again nothing happened I just released his paw and he went back to finding pheasant. I didn't see any raw meat in the area I just think it was a convenient place for my dog to get down to the creek and get some water. Don't remember seeing a pail or box around either. I'd love to learn more about trapping just not sure my gf wants me coming home with pelts, she's already not too fond of the deer and turkey that are hanging on the wall in the basement.
Good luck trapping.

Ken, I could have hooked him up with some carcasses if thats all he needed. I'm down to one now but had plenty. If he wants to trap that at some other time I would be glad to help. Trapping thru the ice is a pain but works. March is very productive for us and we will put some necklaces on quite a few. I haven't had any luck with Fishers yet. I'm not in a real productive spot but that will change next week. I'm trapping a little north.
NHGiff- most states require coni's 220 and larger to be up at least 4 feet. Not sure about Iowa. I used to try and let abutting land owners know when I was trapping in area. Now your better off keeping your mouth shut. As trappers we do everything to prevent catching non targeted, but sometimes it is impossible. I'm sure this was the case with your situation. I know there are spots where I live that I wouldn't dare trap until the end of hunting season. Sorry you had a bad experience, and hope the pup is alright.
