I haven't used a slug gun in years and even then it was just the smooth bore single shot using "pumpkin ball" shells. So this topic is out of what I'm use to or know. I'm kind thinking that next year, I'd like to look into getting a slug gun or those gun only areas. The smokepole works great now but it would be nice to have a follow up shot and more comfortable distance out a slug gun as opposed to the smokepole. I'm thinking about the Remington 20ga. 18.5" CL Express ShurShot Cantelever Slug to be exact. Not too thrilled about the ShurShot stock but I'll have to feel and shoulder it first hand before making any comments on it.
What I'd like to know is there any one on here that has some good experience with using slug guns? If so, what's the big difference in using a 12ga and 20ga other than probably the ovious...weight in the field. Can you get a 125 to 150 yards shot out a 20ga and is accurate?

I have a 980 ultra slugger that is 1 of the most phenomenal slug guns I have shot, it is a little heavy but You get used to it it is super accurate I have shot 1/2 gallon milk jugs at 200 yrds, not a shot I would take on deer but it is capable of doing it. If you are going to sit in a treestand i would highly reccomend it, I have used this gun to hunt in Ny several times you get used to the weight.

I was very impressed with the accuracy of my sons shotguns with rifled slug barrels, one is a Remington, the other a Mossberg. with open sights I easily held small/tight groups at 50 yards. I've not put a scope on either, but with a scope 100+ yards would be easy.
Both are 20 guage and both have dropped deer in their tracks, shot distances where about 20 yards and about 40-50.

I have a mossberg 500 youth that use. For a cheap gun its accurate enough to 200 yards (if you can hit milk jugs you can shoot deer at 200!!). The biggest problem is the trigger. It is very stiff and almost impossible to do a mod on to make it better.
If you want an awesome gun, I would suggest getting a slug gun like a remington or a browning and send it to briley (i am sure that there are others but I am familiar with them) Have them do a trigger job. It will make a world of difference.
You will also have to spend some money on ammo. Slug guns seem to be a bit fiiniky about what ammo they like. You can get huge varations ( I had up to 10" in group size) in group size.
I ended up with the hornady sst.
Good luck and and make sure you use the led sled sighting in!!

I got my wife a Mossberg 500 youth combo last year and she loves it. I've shot the slug barrel a few times and I like it. +1 on the Hornady SST ammo. I've heard it's good out to 200 yards but haven' tried that far myself yet. It's a pretty affordable gun that won't break the bank.

Rom, dont you have an Eoncore? If so get a slug barrel but I know you want a second shot but it is supposed to be a tack driver.

Rom, dont you have an Eoncore? Not me I thought about it a couple of years ago but never did it. A single shot would still be quicker than the smoke pole so if I had the Encore, I'd be all over the slug barrel for it

Tom down here we are shotgun only on state land.. I have a Hastings 24" fully rifled barrel for my Remington 11-87 and a 2.5x weaver scope on it, and I shoot Brenneke 2 3/4" K.O. slugs. at 100 yrds. it shoots 3 to 4" groups which is good enough for me...Bob..
