Last fall I asked about this gun (few lines down). After thinking about it all summer, I am not comfortable using or letting someone use this gun.
What happened last year? Well twice it went "unsafe" on my son, almost shooting his head off once. He and I were together where we were meeting my uncle for lunch in the woods. I left him there, while I went off looking for my uncle. About 10 minutes later: BOOM, from my son. I was all excited thinking he must have had a deer come by. When I got to him, he was white as a ghost holding the gun out like it was a deadly snake. He says the gun was slung over his shoulder and it fired! Swears his hand was NOT on the trigger or anywhere near it and the safety was on when he slung the rifle (he's been drilled to always check this). Later that day, he was sitting on a stand and he found the safety off, it had been on when he sat down.
I used the gun the next 2 weeks of the season and nothing happened. I have talked to him multiple times and he wants no part of ever touching that gun again and to this day swears he never did anything unsafe with it. The fact that he refuses to use it and his story has not changed 1 word, have made me conclude he isn't hiding anything.
I have come to the conclusion that I have to take the gun out of action. I couldn't live with myself if anything happened to someone using it, family or not. I just don't want to take the chance.
So... What do you do with a rifle that you just don't want used? I am not comfortable selling it to someone else, because I'd hate to hear later that they got hurt with it when I knew there was a problem.
so what do I do with it? It's a Remington 742 in .30-06.
