This post is in response to comments by me & question asked on the “Grouse/Woodcock hunting” post. I didn't want to hijack it any more than I all ready have Sorry I just spoke with a gentleman down at the F&G office in Concord and asked about dove hunting. Apparently, back in 1983 there was a season here in NH that only lasted a few days. A lot of people put pressure on the F&G director at the time and a few legislators as well. The out come was that they put dove on the “song bird” list therefore keeping a hunting season on them closed So like I said the animal lovers shut that down years ago for us! I then asked if he thought there was a chance that it would ever be change back. He told me that working at F&G and from a personal view, he sees there's no way that dove would ever be taken off the song bird list! Which he thought was truly a sad case. I commented that most hunters have no idea what they’re missing out on and that dove are absolutely awesome eating. He kind of chuckled over the phone and said, “You got that right, I have to travel to Rhode Island in order to hunt them myself and if it was up to me, I’d have a NH dove season again”. I guess it's more of a southern thing

Like I said "Stupid Hippies". I'd love to know how a dove got put on the "song bird" list.
Possum? Ken, is there any game you haven't eaten? I always tell people I won't shoot anything that I won't eat...you just keep making my list of things to hunt grow!

I wouldn't eat a possum unless there was some serious coin involved. I have eaten woodchuck and beaver backstraps...never eaten a dove before though...gonna have to try it. Depending on how many I drop in PA, I'll be sure to drop a few dove breast off to you to cook up. Only problem with dove hunting is that they're so darn hard it hit because their very fast! Dropped a double one time and when for for the third one but only clipped it and never found it. Hitting a triple has been a challenge that we've always talked about when dove hunting was the topic of discussion. Sometimes their even hard to hind when you do drop them depending on what food source you're hunting. Back when I hunted them every year, a full day of hunting sometimes only yielded 3 or 4 dove for two boxes of shells! Now 3 or 4 dove to me is just an snack ;D I'll be sure to bring back a few for you even if I have to give up a few evenings of bow hunting Their that good!
