I grew up grouse and woodcock hunting and it was a blast. I would like to expose my kids to it. Is anyone willing to point out a spot or two, or an area to check that might still hold grouse for December, or spots I can look into for next year?

Bob,
Drop me a line and I will give you guys a few places. One of them you know about as you told me to go deer hunting there and I found a few grouse. I have some really good spots up north if you ever make it up that way. If I get some deer early, I would be glad to take you and the boys for some woodcock hunting around here.
Talk to ya and good luck with the elk

Thanks nasty and regnar! We were actually talking about bird/duck hunting last night and the boys don't seem to keen on morning duck hunts, somehting about the 3:30 alarm clock and teenagers just doesn't seem to go together!
Regnar, I still have those kids arrows for your boys, just need to find a way to get em to ya!

Thank god I got a farm 5 minutes from me that lets me hunt anything and everything on his land, he even has a couple of ponds and marsh areas on the land for duck hunting. Turkey season was bad enough getting up at 2:00 and driving 1.5 hours, so I'm pretty happy I only have to drive up the road a few minutes. 8 More days until the opening of goose! I can work all day and hunt until sundown...what a deal!
Hey Firepirate, I got it all now, duck and goose decoys, a field blind, my calls...now I just need some birds!

Not another bird for me to hunt! Looks like I'm going to end up taking a trip up there sometime!

talk about fast shooting! Unless you have a good dog that will hold the bird till you are ready, I think Grouse is hard but still very fun.
All the pheasant I have hunted had to be kicked up to be shot!
Thats what I am used to. But I no longer hunt pheasant, I don't think it is fun in NH.

If you are willing to drive a couple hours, Stratford is the cat's heiney for grouse hunting. More specifically the logging roads/snowmobile trails behind Stratford Bog. I go up the first weekend in October every year, and have never failed to take a limit of grouse every hunting day. Grouse is by far my favorite bird to eat... thanks!! I may have to take a drive this October,I grew up chasing these things every day after school, was never very successfull, but it was a blast.

I have been up a few times this summer. If you are coming down the mtn you are not supposed to go across the bog bridge but the trails above the bog were open. To be honest I would like to see most of the 4 wheelers leave and go pittsburg or berlin. We have been ridding for years before all the "toursits" came to town.
THe orchards she be AWSOME this year. Lots of apples when I was up there 4th of July. Saw a lot of birds with little one as well. I do a lot of Deer hunting on the second orchard as well. I have a few tree stands up there. Lots of deer sign as well.
Good luck and if you see a red sportsmen with two boy and a German SHort hair on it say hey (or the dent wizard truck)
Good luck

Went up this weekend. Saw several moose and a few deer. We ran the dogs down swamp donkey ln and got several points on birds.
Do you mean the pond on the right below the house that is up on the hill on the rd to the bog? I know where you mean. I will be in OH that weekend deer hunting but I will be up several times after that.
Good luck.

What does everybody typically use for shot/choke combos? I'm guessing most of you use a 20g?

Same as Ken, 12 gauge and 7 1/2 or 8 shot. I'm sure when I get my 20ga someday, I'll be using it I saw a ton on grouse last weekend when out hunting.
