Funny how things turn around. We have been out trying to get a shot at one. It gets to a point you think your doing something wrong. Then it all works out. We set up at a new spot we have been hunting and this time we change our time and place for a stand. Dan went up wind and I down wind watching the back door. Dan doing the calling with his Foxpro. Yes, we do use a Foxpro, even though we both have WT. I did have my WT on my back just in case. I set up on the edge of a swamp and sat by a big old pine. It was a good spot. It felt right. Dan let the caller go and I was thinking the wind might play with the sound, but he had it playing just right. Because about 8 minutes into the call I saw her come in on my right. She was dog trotting and I figured she had winded Dan. She kind of caught me off guide as I was thinking approach not exit. But, that's coyote hunting. Had no idea I was there, went behind a Pine and that is when I raised my new AR and flicked the safety. She heard that as she was only 30 yds away from me. That was that full run. I was on target fast as I have a Burris red dot site on the AR. Shot 3 and led a little more and hit her with the 4th down and hit her again with the 5th just to make sure. The .223 60grn V-Max that I handload did a great job. Hit her in the shoulder and the other just behind. Did make a mess of the hide on the one side with no exit. Priceless. Meet up with Dan with coyote in tow. Went over the sign and talked it out as we learn ever time we go out. Make sure that it sinks in as it makes us better hunters. Dan can add to the tale from his end. Highwaystar

Dan, she weighed 40.5 pounds. Is that our biggest? She is a good size coyote. Highwaystar

Maybe just under a 100 yds. Came across the swamp between us and went up to were Dan was. Stood there and then came my way. Wind at her back. We walked the tracks in the new snow and saw all she did. I was good to have the snow as it showed us what had hppened. If, I was not down wind she would of made it out of there. It was a great set up. I was in the woods on the edge of a big field, Dan was on the edge of the swamp and field where they meet. The field worked for us to keep her close to us. My stand was little over a 100 yds from the field in the woods. We have moved in the woods as we are not bring them into the open fields.

Highwaystar, way to go! I am way late on noticing this thread. My apology, not sure how I missed it for so long. I am so tickled for you it makes me sit here and grin at the computer.
You put together a great stand set-up. You plumb outsmarted the coyote by using its traits against it, then back-trailed it to learn what it did before the shot. Impressive! You will use the behavior info from that back-trail against the next coyote.
How close did it get to your partner before it turned around and left? Just think how many have done that to you on other stands, without you knowing about them. You turned the tables on this one. Sweeet!

okanagan apology accepted. ;D How close did it get to your partner before it turned around and left? She was 45 yds or so. She sat down in the snow and then moved my way. True! How many have we called and missed due to not coming into the call. It is a feeling only the hunter can feel as he sees the coyote laying on the ground after the shot. I was beaming with pride as Dan and I have pulled it off again. As always thank you for your praise. Highwaystar
