So I took my first onto the streams of NH Friday morning and could hardly contain my excitement. I get up there and the rivers are running a bit higher than would be optimal for fishing, so I hike further up river to see what it's like...not much better I decide, so I backtrack and check out one of the backwoods trout ponds...no rising so I didn't stick around. I hike back out to the river and decide to fish it. It's running kind of fast so wading was next to impossible, I jump from rock to rock and get out as far as I can...nothing biting in the pocket waters.
I head back to shore and walk along the bank to a new location, take a couple of casts before hitting some light brush behind me...no big deal, I'll roll cast...BAD IDEA!!!
On my second roll cast, somehow the second section from the top of my pole comes off of the rest of the rod...I didn't panic figuring the fly at the end would catch on a guide and I'd bring the top two sections back in...WRONG!!! Apparently I lost my fly when I hit the brush behind me and as I'm bringing in my line I notice nothing coming with it. At that point I couldn't see the two sections, let alone the fact that they were in some pretty fast water. I looked for an hour or so on the banks hoping it would get out of the current and get stuck...no luck.
I spent the winter building the rod costing me some good money and the first time out it's gone! I wrote to St. Croix and hopefully I can just purchase the two top blanks and rebuild them again, but I have a feeling I'm going to get nowhere with them.
What a horrible day....
