I am getting into fly fishing this year and in January started tying flies. Anyone else tie their own flies? Even if you don't tie flies what is your favorite pattern?

Carefull, this fly tying stuff is adictive. I've got more money tied up in material than I'll ever be able to justify. But boy is it fun! I don't have any particular favorite to tie, I have several different patterns for every place I fish, and since all water is a little different in terms of what lives where, I have a bunch of fly boxes marked as to what river they are meant for. Go with what you're in the mood to tie. One day I might feel like tying tandem streamers for ice out trolling, and the next day it's small emergers. Start making stuff up, experiment with materials and different techniques. Take a tying class, they're a lot of help. Just find your local chapter of Trout Unlimited and ask away! Punch in TU.org and get the national site and it will send you in the right direction, or just google your state TU and see what pops up. The first time you catch a trout on a fly you tied, you'll be hooked yourself.

I still don't have all the materials I need. My dog has my bucktail hidden somewhere right now so until I can get another I can't tie that many flies. Hopefully tomorrow I will get to go to the store for some materials.

I sent my mom out with a list of materials to get me today, but she wont be back for a good 6 hours. I will take a pic soon of the flies I've tied and try to post it.

I've got the stuff to tie but I'm not sure it I'd calling "fly tying" The only thing I can make are hare ear nymphs I make my own jigs for ice fishing but even those don't turn out like I want them too.

My mom returned with all my fly tying stuff. I had her get me an assorted pack of hackle, yellow chenille, hooks, tan thread, gold tinsel, rubber for legs, and 2 other things I can't think of. I have tied 3 flies already tonight a royal wolf, royal coachman, and a fly that has a white tail, body, wings, and haclcke(I forgot it's name but it looks cool ;D).

Here is a link to a couple of files I tied a while back. I am an avid fly fisherman, mostly salt water now, and have been tying for 20 + years www.virtualflybox.com/tyers/tyer.php?id=89It's sort of taken a back seat to my predator hunting and call making business, but I get out on the water every chance I can get. We have a world class striper fishery here along the coast, and if you haven't tried it, you are missing a real lot of fun Al@THO THO Game Calls www.THOGameCalls.com

I love tying flies and do it alot in the winter time here in Alaska. I used to teach tying classes for Orvis. Some of the hot patterns that work up here for Big Rainbow Trout are: Cone Head Zuddlers, Stimulators (orange foe ease of visibility), and Egg Sucking Leeches. The CHZ is more time consuming, but well worth tying. I always add extra lead and use head cement on the trimmed deer hair for weight and durability. I have a few other secret patterns, but I can't give all the secrets away...lol

I just started tying this past winter because it gave me something to do...besides, now I don't have to buy all of them all over again. Have you gone after the steelhead out your way yet troutpro? I went last fall, although I didn't catch anything, those things are gorgeous. I spent every weekend last summer fishing some of the mountain spring streams where none of the trout are stocked and can't even begin to tell you how much fun it is.

No, I haven't fished for steelhead yet. I wanted to last year but never had the chance. I am hoping to go this year though. I do have to travel a little ways to get to the steelhead. Today is opener for trout and I am just about to leave, but I am using spinning gear today. It is awesome to catch wild trout.

Spinning gear?!?! What fun is that? The NH trout season opens January 1st and runs until somewhere around Columbus Day...although, I'm not hardcore enough to go out in January, although I did fish into Nov. this past year. I'm just finishing up on a new fly rod that was my winter project and can't wait to get out and test it...I'm thinking after turkey season is over, I'm going to be hitting the water for a long time.

After having had one trout get off and caught one trout on the fly rod I don't know how much I will use the spinning gear this year. It was fun to fight the trout even though it was only 11 inches and was hooked about 10 feet from me. The next week or so looks nasty so I don't know if I will get out much.

I don't think I'll ever go back to the spinning gear, I even go for the Strippers out here with the fly rod now...casting a flyrod has got to be one of the most relaxing things for me...that and where I go, the scenery is second to none. I was fortunate to have done a lot of hiking before I got into flyfishing so I knew of a lot of places where people just don't go. I'll get up at 4:00 in the morning, drive two hours and hike 4-5 miles just to fish for a day.
When I figure out how to post pictures on here, perhaps I'll post a few.
