I have been thinking of getting a new rifle for Bear Season. Just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with the .300 WSM. I have always liked the .300 Win Mag, and have heard that the WSM has the same characteristics. Sounds like the WSM burns powder better and is a short action. Both are a plus in my book.

THE .300WSM is a nice weapon. With a 180gr bullet you'd be up around 2610fps. At 300 yrds you'd drop about 6" if zerod at 200yds.

Is the drop rate anywhere close to the 300 Win Mag. Leupold makes a good tactical scope with a BDC for 300 Win Mag. I could use an excuse to buy one.

Depending on what distances I might have to shoot I would go with either a 150gr or 165 gr.
A 150 gr sighted in at 200 yards allows a shooter to hold dead on up ot to 300 yards but also gives you another 100 yards of accurate shooting using kentucky windage (appx 15" low at 400. place cross hairs on spine and your good to go)

b4rifle they are comparable. You don't lose anything between the two of them.

Not to disagree but if you use a factory loaded 150gr round fired out of the .300WSM if zerod at 200yrds the bullet should drop about 6 to 7" depending what bullet is used (ie. spire point, boat tail). The numbers can be bettered somewhat if you reload your own and work up a safe load above factory loads.

Its been a while so I am not sure if I am even reading the numbers correct but the federal website give a 150gr BT zeroed in at 200 yards 16.9" of drop at 400 yards. 300 yards it is 5.8. Am I forgetting something?? that is very possible!!

You guys are tempting me to visit the gun shop today. I am leaning toward a savage. They are no frills, but a good shooting rifle. I won't have to hesitate spray painting one of those.

Hey Regnar. No your not missing anything your numbers are about right. My only point is if the round will drop 5 to 6 inches at 300 yrds I wouldn't hold deadon. Some guys would. Depends on the shooter. I would aim midway between vitals and spine.
b4rifle what Regnar and I are saying is that that weapon is a very flat shooting rifle and well worth owning.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I will have to start shopping around for some good prices. I think it will fill the ticket, flat shooting and will reach out when I need it to. I like the 300 Win Mag, but would rather have the short action. You guys sold me on this one.
