Tried to get in a morning of duck hunting yesterday, headed out in the god awefull early morning, drove to our spot, plopped the canoe into the water, knowing we'd have to smash a bit of ice along the edges, no problem, we usually paddle up river for 1/2 hour to the blind, moving water won't freeze!
WRONG. We got about halfway there, ice along both edges then the entire river was locked up tight. We tried bashing through it figuring we must have just hit a frozen patch, nope, ice got thicker and thicker. We backed out and did an impromptu setup in a different spot. Saw some ducks, but nothing would come close, all flying VERY high. Very little shooting to be heard so everyone was having troubles.
Explored a bit when we were done hunting, the entire area is iced in solid except for a couple of hundred yards where we put in the canoe. One of the major ponds that this river feeds looked bone dry, nothing but mud showing, that explains the lack of water movement.
Oh well, short of warm up, our duck season is over!
